Dim Dim Sum 興發點心茶樓 in Taman Ungku Tun Aminah is the newest dim sum boy in JB town. Just over a month old and it has already caught the attention of Johor Bahru foodies.
Jalan Pendekar 16. The Store Skudai 对面.
Dim Dim Sum is located on Jalan Pendekar 16 at the spanking new shop lots just beside the refurbished and expanded The Store Skudai (Plaza Tasek).
Dim Dim Sum is bare bones inside. Cement floor, bare whitewashed walls, simple tables and stackable plastic chairs. No air con but ceiling fans keep the place cool and comfortable.
The youthful owner chefs are 阿聞 (left) and Jonathan (right). Both buddies worked at a Tim Ho Wan 添好運 outlet in Singapore for 3 years before venturing out on their own. Every dim sum piece is hand made by 阿聞 and Jonathan in the kitchen.
Dim Dim Sum's menu. At the newly opened shop, the range is modest at the moment but new items are added to the menu continuously.
Here's what we tried. We like all of them.
We started with the classic Prawn Dumpling (RM4.50).
The springy wrap is filled with fresh sweet prawns. We like this so much that we ordered another of this dish.
Leek and Shrimp Dumpling (price RM4.50).
Love the flavour and crunch of chopped leeks with the sweetness of fresh prawn. We also had a second round of this lovely dish 😋
Deep Fried Taro Puff (RM4.50).
The sweet taro wrap has a nice crisp outside and inside the juicy tender char siew filling was sweet savoury.
Steam Green Sprout Dumpling with Prawns 鮮蝦豆苗餃 (price RM4.50). Love this combination of green flavours with fresh prawn sweetness. Also enjoyed the soft crunch of green sprouts with the bouncy crunch of juicy prawns.
This Tim Ho Wan inspired Baked BBQ Pork Buns (price RM5.80). The sweet crisp bun wraps tender stewed diced char siew smothered in a thick savoury sweet sauce.
(RM4.50). Soft radish cake with slivers of real radish with the outside pan seared to a slight browned crisp. Flavour is savoury sweet.
The obligatory Stewed Chicken Claw. I never miss this dish at dim sum sessions 😃 The rather small claws (small chicken 😂) were stewed till very soft. Savoury sweet with a little nice spiciness.
Chee Cheong Fun with Prawns 鲜虾粉肠 (price RM4.50). Fresh sweet prawns, the rice wrap was on the slightly thicker side. Light savoury sweet watery sauce.
Chee Cheong Fun with You Char Kueh. Soft rice wrap around crispy Chinese fried crullers. Nice contrast of soft with crispy textures. The cruller does a good job of sponging up the savoury sweet watery sauce. I like this 😋
Prices are nett at Dim Dim Sum No GST. No service tax.
4-Star (out of 5). JB is blessed with restaurant quality dim sum at kopitiam prices. This new Dim Dim Sum shop in JB is so promising. The food is already good and I am sure this is just the beginning.
