Went to MS Beryani for lunch today after seeing Kevin Leong shared it on ๅ็ๅนณๅฐ JB foodie group (this is one of the groups I follow for leads on the best food in JB). MS Beryani's style of briyani is similar to Mohd Shan of Batu Pahat and Roslin Beriani House in Kebun Teh, JB which are all among the best nasi briyani of Johor.
They use a combination of gas and wood to cook the rice at MS Beryani ๐
The kambing (lamb) and ayam (chicken) are stewed in separate large pots with lots of spices and coconut milk. I like it that the stewed lamb and chicken are served directly from the large stewing pots so they are at maximum moistness.
The menu is simple - basically just beryani ayam (chicken) and beryani kambing (lamb) with optional sides. Prices are very reasonable.
MS Beryani is always full house during lunch, so I come here long before the lunch time crush. Decor is simple with classroom style seating to maximise capacity. The shop is near Plaza Angsana, so it is a good brunch / lunch option if you are shopping there.
The briyani kambing set costs RM10 - it comes with dalca (lentil curry) and pencuk (pickled vegetables) on availability basis. Today, no pencuk ๐ The papadum costs RM1 (can skip as they are generic).
The mound of yellow and white long grain basmati rice splashed with thick heavy brownish curry smelled so aromatic.
MS Beryani's tagline is "The Aroma of Dad Legacy". The family of MS Beryani is related to the family of Mohd Shan Baryani of Batu Pahat. They share the same DNA in flavour, aroma and presentation.
Woo hoo.. parting the rice revealed a good size piece of stewed lamb shank.
The stewed lamb shank was lovely. The juicy meat with every fibre well infused with sweet savoury aromatic spices was fall off the bone tender. The spice blend flavour was robust but did not overwhelm the natural underlying subtle gamey lamb taste. The gravy was not spicy at all.
MS Beryani's briyani rice is so.... good. The rice was moist but not overly greasy. The long basmati grains were tender yet had a soft nuttiness to the bite. They were well infused with flavoursome and aromatic spices. Every bite was a treat for the taste buds and nose.
The dalca (lentil curry) was very good too with a mild spicy kick in the aftertaste. There were egg plant, carrot and pineapple in the curry.
Recommended for you ๐ One of my top favourite nasi briyani places in Johor, Malaysia and Singapore now. Everything from the meat, rice to curry are excellent.
๐ Pro-tip. If you are a lamb lover, try to be here by 11am as their stewed lamb sells out early. (Lots of pre-orders and takeaways.)
I posted this story on Mohd Shah Nasi Baryani in Batu Pahat in the early days of Johor Kaki blog in Mar 2012. You can see the common DNA in both shops ๐ click

The lamb and chicken are a little too laden with sugar. The lamb I got was very bony. The chicken thigh and drumstick were tender. Ricw was aromatic.
