We joined Joyce's family for dinner at the popular John's Chinese BBQ Restaurant 敍香園海鮮燒臘酒家 at Richmond Hill - it's their favourite Hong Kong Roast place in Toronto.
John's Chinese BBQ 敍香園 is a simple but comfortably furnished restaurant. It looks like similar busy, casual, no frills restaurants in Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan etc which are focused on serving tasty food at good value. Many John's Chinese BBQ customers are regulars and families living nearby in Richmond Hill.
This Pipa Duck 琵琶鸭 is John's Chinese BBQ's signature and also Joyce's family's favourite. The dark golden brown skin outside had a gleaming sheen and even looked snappily crackly to the eye. (Price per bird CDN52++.)
Like British and Irish ducks, Canadian ducks have thicker skin with a layer of fat underneath. This is unlike Malaysian ducks which are lean, have thin skin and little fat.
The duck was well marinated with savoury sauce and roasted till crisp and all the savoury flavours deeply infused into the duck's skin, fat and meat. The meat was tender and juicy, bursting with infused savoury flavours with every bite which nicely complemented the duck's natural gamey sweet taste, especially in the fat and skin.
Steamed free range chicken served with spring onion and ginger sauce.
The chicken meat and skin were tender and smooth with congealed visceral fat (like jelly).
We love the bird's natural chicky sweetness which was complemented by the aromatic spring onion and ginger sauce which also provided a bit of savouriness and gentle heat to the dish.
油炸肥肠 Fried large pork intestines.
The large pig intestines were cut lengthwise and deep fried till the outside was golden brown crisp. The texture was a blend of crisp and soft spongy. It tasted savoury from the fermented bean marinade and had a bit of porcine taste. The level of porcine taste was higher than pork intestine dishes in Singapore / Malaysia but I enjoyed it.
Steamed tilapia fish Cantonese style. We wanted a grouper fish but it was sold out (call ☎ 905-881-3333 to reserve, if you like a specific type of fish).
The fish was tender, soft, sweet with soy sauce providing the savoury balance. The subtle fleeting earthiness was well masked by the julienned ginger and spring onion.
Braised tofu with mushrooms.
For the obligatory greens, we had simple blanched kai lan.
Recommended for you 👍 If you are looking for an authentic Hong Kong Cantonese restaurant in Toronto, check out John's BBQ. Ingredients are fresh and skilfully prepared in the old school way, so the tastes and flavours are the same as the best similar restaurants in Hong Kong. Prices at John's BBQ are slightly higher than similar restaurants in Toronto. (John's is also famous for their siew yok and char siew.)
