Today, we went to Collin's ® Gastro Dining at the newly re-opened Funan IT Mall.
Collin's ® is spacious, bright and family friendly. The decor looked polished yet remained casual and welcoming. The staff were enthusiastic, warm and friendly.
Collin's ® which has some 25 outlets in Singapore started as a coffee shop, one-man-operation Western food hawker stall in Geylang. Founder Collin Ho began his culinary career as an Army cook during national service and then worked in hotel kitchens for the next 20 years. Starting from its coffee shop base in 2012, Collin's ® expanded into restaurants. Collin's ® restaurants are like the Western food equivalent of budget airlines. Collin's ® restaurants grew rapidly as it has a large, fast growing loyal following who love Collin's ® affordable Western fare. (Reference: The New Paper.)
Collin's ® Gastro Dining has an extensive menu inspired by owner Collin Ho's travels and brainstorm sessions with his chefs. There are salads, appetisers, entrees of steak, pork, ribs, seafood, poultry, pasta, sausage, pizzas, burgers, house made desserts, cakes, juices, shakes, coffee, tea and alcohol, cocktails, wines etc. Everything also have lah. I was pleasantly surprised by the budget friendly pricing given the prime location, upscale restaurant ambiance, premium dishes and full table service.
Three of us, we shared an obligatory, customary Caesar's Salad. Crunchy baby romaine lettuce, boiled egg, and crispy crouton dressed with savoury bacon bits and Parmesan cheese. (Price S$8++.)
Grilled octopus with garlic aioli on mashed potato. (Price S$22++.)
The dish had layers of savouriness from the mashed potato to the garlic aioli to the spongy grilled octopus which had quite intense briny savoury salty taste. Perfect to go with beer.
French Duck Confit. Whole duck leg served with mushroom rice pilaf, vegetables and barbecue sauce. (Price S$16++.)
The duck was tender with mainly savoury salty flavour that infused every fibre in the dish. Not overly greasy.
The highlight of the meal, a tomahawk steak. Sold by weight, this one came to S$160++.
We had our tomahawk done medium, which came out nicely according to specification. (From my recent Canada trip, I am reminded again that, that is something I can't take for granted even in ang moh land.)
The steak was tender and juicy, especially the fatty parts which I love. It tasted savoury and beefy with a bit of smoky toastiness from the seared fringe. It was nice.
With no more tummy space for dessert, I wrapped up the sumptuous lunch with just a robust coffee.
Even at this shiny, upscale new outlet at Funan IT Mall, Collin's ® has stayed true to its core "to bring restaurant-quality food to the masses at affordable prices”. As a steak lover, I would love to come back to taste Collin's other steaks. I am eyeing their 45-day dry-age Angus prime rib ๐
