My makan buddy Puan Chong who lives in Kulai has been showing me her family's favourite eating places. Today, we met up at Chicky Don Ayam Goreng Paprika fried chicken restaurant.
Chicky Don Ayam Goreng Paprika fried chicken is a simple shop lot restaurant. Not surprisingly, its main clientele are students, younger folks and families from around Kulai.
Many flavours of fried chicken on the menu.
Then, there's the traditional ice desserts and ice cream.
Five of us, we ordered a few different flavours of fried chicken to share.
Nasi lemak set with Don's original flavour fried chicken RM12.90 nett.
Mee siam combo with Devil Spicy fried chicken RM12.90 nett.
Salted Egg Yolk flavour RM13.50.
We shared an assortment of different flavours - honey mustard, black pepper, Japanese okonomiyaki, yuzu sauce.
Overall, the fried chicken come in good size pieces (pretty good value for money). The batter is slightly thicker than KFC's but still crispy. Most of the quite robust flavour is on the crisp batter and skin. Five of us, we all had different preferences for the flavour. According to Chicky Don owner Alice Tay, the salted egg yolk flavour is their best seller. Personally, my favourite is Don's original savoury flavour as it is not so assertive.
Chicky Don uses fresh chicken. It's tender and moist inside (though not as juicy as KFC). I like it that I can taste a bit of fresh chicken sweetness.
Every serving comes with a flower which is Chicky Don's signature presentation.
Don's Ais Kacang RM6.90 nett.
Nice big mound of flavoured shaved ice. The shaved ice had the just right texture - soft, almost fluffy light, well infused with not too sweet syrup flavours which are released when the ice melts in the mouth. Hey, don't take "melt in the mouth" shaved ice for granted - there's shaved ice that is gritty and hard, doesn't absorb flavours, and melts too slowly in the mouth, only to taste like cold water 😂 You know what I mean.
In Don's ice kacang, there are boiled corn, grass jelly, boiled red beans, cendol noodles, lychee, and crushed peanuts to complement the not overly sweet shaved ice.
Teh Tarik RM8.90 nett.
We all love this. It is frozen teh tarik (milk tea) shaved and served - that's all (well... topped with grass jelly). Fluffy light shaved ice that melts in the mouth to release their not too sweet milk tea flavour.
You know right, during whole day food trails we always have to look for places to chill between meals. Next time, when eating around Kulai, we will check in at Chicky Don for ice kacang.
