Foodie buddy Lee KC recommended me this seafood & fish soup stall at Kedai Kopi Sin Loi in Johor Jaya's Ros Merah section.
新圆香海鲜汤 is a stall in 新樂香荼餐室 Kedai Kopi Sin Loi coffee shop which spans 2 shop lots.
The menu is on the stall front. There were 9 items. Recalling that KC mentioned seafood soup, I ordered that after checking the price with the boss as price is seasonal for this dish. Today, it's RM13.
There's a generous amount of ingredients consisting of 2 good size fresh prawns, fresh fish slices, dried squid, dried fish maw, clams, scallops, (commercial) fish balls etc.
The light bodied soup is made by boiling pork bones and flavoured with powdered fried fish. All the various seafood i.e. prawns, fish, clams, etc as well as tomatoes and kiam chye (preserved mustard) add their flavours to the savoury sweet soup. No MSG
The soup was full of flavours but I felt that a bit more sweetness from fresh pork would make the soup perfect for me.
There's a choice of noodles - I chose kway teow kia which worked pretty well with the soup.
After the seafood soup, I followed up straightaway with fried fish soup (price RM10). I surprised the lady boss and the gentleman whom I shared the table with 😂
There were 3 huge and thick pieces of fried fish in the bowl. It's the same savoury bone and fried fish powder soup but with less complex flavours without the jumble of seafood.
The thin brown batter wrapping the fish was soft from soaking in the soup. The white meat inside was soft with slight sweetness and subtle underlying earthiness.
This time, I had bee hoon which worked better at picking up the flavours of the soup, though softened by soaking in it.
Information for you 👌 Nice fish and seafood soup. Good value.
(I re-read KC's recommendation and realised that he was talking about the seafood and pork version. He also said eat it with rice, so the noodles won't affect the soup's taste profile 😂 That just means that I need to go back soon and have that too 😋 )
