After a heavy lunch and some shopping, we went to Honolulu Cafe at Centrepoint for the obligatory pit stop. I can never resist a good Hong Kong milk tea and egg
tart, but this was my first time at Honolulu Cafe.
The Honolulu Cafe outlet at Centrepoint is simple and casual but cosy and friendly. The spacious, open layout have a welcoming feel.
They have an extensive Hong Kong cha chaan teng type menu but we were there only to chill a while over milk tea and egg tarts (before heading home).
For egg tarts, I prefer the laminated puff pastry type of cup because my first egg tart was like that. The sweet eggy taste and flaky bite were unforgettable though I cannot remember where I had it. I just want back that childhood feeling of egg tart epiphany.
So, I have an imaginary favourite egg tart like children have
imaginary best friends.
The rim of the cup was crisp with flaky layers - the crumbs and flakes falling onto the table with every bite. The sides and bottom of the cup though, were slightly moist and soft.
The eggy custard was light, smooth and almost jiggly but the eggy sweet taste was rather subdued. It was an enjoyable egg tart though my secret friend
type is sweeter and eggier, almost like an egg perfume on the nose.
I like the rich gold colour of Honolulu Cafe's milk tea but tea fragrance and taste were hardly discernible.
Still, we enjoyed the vibes here and would check in here again for the comforting food and feel, even though we had only their egg tart and milk tea so far.
On a side note, I got my benchmark HK milk tea here at Marathon Cafe in Scarborough, Ontario, Canada.
Another side note - Singapore homegrown brand, Tong Heng's diamond shaped egg tarts.
We shall try Honolulu Cafe's polo bun next time. What is your experience with Honolulu Cafe? What else should we try here next time?
