A long time ago, 2016 to be exact, I posted about 58 Minced Meat Noodle in Taman Jurong Market & Food Centre. Buddy Niven commented then that I should also try the boss' sister's stall across the road at Taman Jurong Shopping Centre. I finally did this morning, over half a decade later ๐, and man it was good. One of my top ten favourite bak chor mee in Singapore, in fact. Thank you Niven ๐
Most Singapore bak chor mee lovers would have tried or at least heard about the famous 58 Minced Meat Noodle.
However, not as many have heard about the sister stall inside 399 Food Court inside Taman Jurong Shopping Centre across the road from the hawker centre.
399 Food Court is air conditioned. There was hardly any queue at 58 Minced Meat Noodle stall the last few times I was here recently. The long and perpetual queue here was for Seri Muslim Food stall.
Only one serving size, $4. Very reasonable.
The large mound of mee pok noodles was topped with lean pork slices, stewed mushrooms, and pork liver slices. When I didn't see any lard croutons, I asked the lady for it.
"Ker yi kay woh ney ker... ๐ ney ker....๐ lard, mah?"
Lady obliged with the sian look nonchalantly.
But, oh... I love their sauce. Savoury, lardy, sweet, spicy, and tangy together in a wet, slurpy blend that deliciously enveloped every strand and then some.
The noodles weren't done in the spaghetti al dente way, but why should it, right? It's a little soft with slight, subtle crunch.
Though initially intimidated by the amount of carbs, I finished the noodles to the last strand and could have some more.
Usually bak chor mee lean pork slices are a little stiff, dry and often tasteless, but this at 58 was soft-tender, moist and subtly porcine sweet. Love it.
The pork liver is not in the same league as the legendary Mui Siong but MS's noodle and sauce are no where nearly as tasty as 58's. That said, 58's pork liver is well above average - cooked through but still soft-tender, feels powdery and tastes fresh ๐
Wish I could say the soup was like that at my primary school tuck shop, but still, it was gently savoury sweet and was nice enough. Overall, this 58 Minced Meat Noodles stall is one of the top ten best in Singapore, in my book.
So yeah, if the queue at the Taman Jurong Market side is too long or if the stall is closed (on Tues & Weds), you can get an equally good bak chor mee at 399 Food Court across the road. Actually, I'll just come here straight ๐
