Curry Puff at Heap Seng Leong Coffee Shop

You know, when I happen to be in the North Bridge Road / Golden Mile area and have time on my hands, I enjoy chilling out at Heap Seng Leong coffeeshop with their bulletproof coffee and a curry puff. There's something about the charm of gritty Hainanese or Foochow coffeeshops whether in Singapore, Malaysia or the Riaus of Indonesia. (Heap Seng Leong coffee shop was founded by Hainanese and current owners are Foochow.)

Stall name: No name curry puff stall in Heap Seng Leong coffee shop

Address: 10 North Bridge Road, #01-5109, Singapore 190010

Heap Seng Leong's kopi gu yu kosong (butter coffee) is a bitter brew, rough even with the cube of silky butter taking away some of the sharp edge. It's like a masochist's concoction, its pleasure comes after enduring its Robusta bitterness (I like my kopi kosong i.e. neat). It's an affordable joy for its fans but I doubt that it will stay for long at today's price of $1.10 a pop.

Kopi (Nanyang coffee), kaya toast and soft boiled eggs are the staple trinity of Hainanese / Foochow coffee shops.

At Heap Seng Leong, I sometimes opt for a curry puff instead with my kopi gu yu. The curry puff stall makes everything in the coffee shop, so we can smell the coffee and curry spices at the same time when they fry the spiced potatoes (they only have curry potatoes, no other flavours now).

(Strictly speaking these are epok epok as they have single layer dough crust. Curry puffs have multiple layers in their dough crust.)

Me sunbathing my coffee in the morning rays while waiting for the curry puffs to be ready 😄 Life is so good.

Freshly fried curried potatoes. These are hand wrapped in dough pockets and then deep fried.

This golden brown ingots of flavour go for $1 each which I feel is good value today.

Lai liao lai liao (here here) my tongue scathing hot curry puff with my butter coffee.

The skin was crisp and thin with a savoury biscuit like taste. The curry potato filling was soft like a thick paste and quite smooth. It was just gently spicy with the natural sweetness of potato.
