Pastaria Abate @ 86 Neil Road • Our Simple Christmas Lunch & Panettone

As usual I arrived ahead of schedule 😬 Pastaria Abate is super accessible as it is just 5 minutes walk from either Outram Park or Maxwell MRT stations (Outram Park is slightly further though). 

Pastaria Abate is not a big restaurant. Long narrow space with a rustic, warm, homely feel. I like the comfortable soft bench seats. The air was filled with easy listening classical music I like which added to the pleasant atmosphere.

I kaypoh kaypoh walked around since the rest were not here yet. This is Pastaria Abate's selection of panettone this Christmas (Pastaria Abate curates a selection of fine panettone every Christmas).

Pastaria Abate has a good range of pasta, breads, pizza and cakes. We started with a sfincione (price $26.80+). It's a traditional street food from the streets of Palermo, Sicily.

Taste and feel wise, the sfincione was similar to a pizza with tomato sauce and grated cheese topping. Chewy spongy with layers of rich savoury flavours and a little bit of sweet and zing from tomatoes. Bits of herbs added their fragrance.

Mixed Seafood Squid Ink Aglio Olio (price $29.80+).

We all loved this aglio olio. The pasta was done al dente with a nice tender crunch to the bite. The pasta had subtle squid ink taste which I like. The seafood and olive oil sauce was rich with depth of umami savoury flavours. The prawns, clams, mussels and squid were fresh 👍

All of us had other appointments, so we jumped straight to dessert and coffee / tea 😃

We picked this "duck panettone" which is my favourite 😃 🦆

The panettone felt like a dense, firmer sort of spongy cake (though technically it is a bread). It had a buttery citrusy fragrance. Tasted richly buttery sweet with a bit of orangey flavours from orange cream. On the outside, there's chocolate and icing sugar. Very nice. I have this duck panettone every year since I first had it in 2020 🦆

This duck panettone weighs 750 grams and Pastaria Abate sells it for $48. It's quite good value as far as panettone goes in Singapore.

Menabrea beer from Italy's oldest brewery founded in 1846. Yeah, only slightly younger than the founding of modern Singapore in 1819.

Nice light, clean, fruity tasting pale lager (with a subtle fizz? that's what I remembered 😬 )

If you are a coffee lover, ask the staff about this Bialetti coffee machine deal. If I remember correctly, it was - buy two cartons of refills at low $100 something total and get the machine free. Then, future refills available at Pastaria Abate at 50 cents each. Sounds like a good deal.

I didn't get it because doctor say I should not drink coffee because I have arterial fibrillation 🥺 So, I don't have coffee at home, but may drink a bit only when I am outside lah 🤭

We enjoyed our simple meal and more importantly our fellowship. Merry Christmas to you and maybe try a panettone for your Christmas bread or cake this year 🌲
