Hua Yu Wee Seafood • Singapore Easties Old Favourite • Menu & Food Review 华友园

Most food lovers in Singapore's east seemed to have eaten at or at least know about Hua Yu Wee Seafood. It's the last grand old lady standing from a row of bungalow restaurants that the ruled Singapore seafood scene during their 1970s heyday. Today, Hua Yu Wee remains popular but is not much mentioned in social media.

Restaurant name: Hua Yu Wee Seafood  华友园

Address: 462 Upper East Coast Road, Singapore 466508

Tel: 6442 9313

Hours: 5:00pm - 11:00pm

Hua Yu Wee has a huge car park but it was full. Come early if you want to avoid parking headaches 😜

The air conditioned section was full house this Monday evening.

We managed to snag an outdoor table by calling in to make a reservation. No air conditioning but quite cool and comfortable in the evening.

This courtyard used to be sea fronting before land reclamation moved the beach a couple of kilometres south.

We didn't order too many dishes as we were on a whole day food trail and city tour since day break with friends from overseas, and this was dinner before durian 😬

This one crab from Vietnam weighing < 800 grams cost SGD68. The waitress encouraged the four of us to order two crabs but we were already ¾ full when we arrived 😬

The crab was meaty, its flesh light and mildly sweet.

Hua Yu Wee's chili crab is all about their thick gooey sauce. It was well balanced umami savoury sweet spicy with pronounced taste of sweet onion, spicy garlic and chili pepper. Would love it even more if the crustacean umami stood out a bit more.

I enjoyed it so much 😋 Burp 🤭

We had a small serving of blanched prawns with Chinese wine 白灼蝦.

The prawns the size of my forefinger were fresh, firm tender and crustacean sweet. Not the sweetest though but it suddenly felt nicer when we saw that we were charged a grand $16 for the lot 🤗

Sweet and sour pork ribs 排骨王.

The fall off the bone fried tender pork was enveloped in a savoury sweet tangy classic sweet and sour sauce.

We all love this silver fish fried rice. There was wok hei and savoury sweetness from the dried white bait fish and sweet rice.

The dish was a mix of soft egg, tender fluffy rice, light crispy crunchy dried white bait fish and juicy crunch of bean sprouts.

We appreciate it that they plucked off the bean sprouts' head and roots, leaving only the stalk's sweet juicy crunch for us. We also like it that the fried rice wasn't overly greasy.

Only complain is it lured us to overindulge in carbs 😬 🤭

I am ambivalent about kang kong but definitely not a fan of kang kong stir fried with sambal as it tends to be overly salty. Normally, I won't pick this dish at restaurants.

But, it turned out that I enjoyed Hua Yu Wee's rendition of sambal kang kong as the savoury spiciness was mild and well balanced. Needless to say, the vegetable was fresh, juicy and crunchy.

My first time at Hua Yu Wee and we only sampled a small portion of their menu. We enjoyed the food we had. I like the casual, rustic ambiance and pleased with their reasonable pricing. Service was responsive even though the restaurant was extremely busy this Monday evening. Looking forward to be back for more dishes.
