Bublik.sg • Boutique Grocer of Fine Food from Eastern Europe

Bublik.sg

Dropped by with a friend to browse the newly opened Eastern European fine food shop Bublik.sg at Sam Leong Road off Jalan Besar.

Yeah, I am a grocery shop browser since childhood because the food labels can tell me so much about faraway places 😬 You know the packaging can teach us so much, like the reason why we used to encourage children to collect postage stamps (who does this anymore 😂 ). When I travel, local grocers are one of the places I love to visit. I used to spend so much time as a child browsing the NTUC shop at Toa Payoh Central (the first NTUC shop in Singapore is still there after 50 years 😯 ).

Bublig.sg just opened when we were there, so the range of goods was still growing. Today, they would have more than when we were there two weeks ago.

Owner Anna and her mum from Azerbaijan were very friendly. They were like ambassadors of the Eastern European countries' products they sell. Patiently explaining things to the curious unker 😬

Christmas is around the corner, so I gravitated towards the range of gingerbread on the shelf.

They were Steinhauer (Bavarian) gingerbread which come in various flavours - original Moscow, mint, fruits, honey, etc.

The gingerbread have a rustic, homely feel.

The gingerbread was tender and light. Its spice flavours were mild and sweet with thin icing sugar adding another layer of sweetness. The flavours were gentle, perfect with tea.

Speaking of tea, the perfect pairing would be with Azercay Buket native black tea from Azerbaijan.

Pasta Santa Bremo Antarctic Krill Smoked.

Creamy paste made with wild krill from Antarctica and a sweet creamy sauce. It tastes mainly sweet with a bit of gentle umami from the smoked krill.

Smoked sprats in oil. Sprats are like sardines and are staples in Russia. The whole canned fish is soft including the bones. It has a mild oily fish taste which I like and enjoy on top of bread or with rice.

The tomato sauce version is similar to canned sardines but sprats are softer, and oilier. Sprats don't have the coarse dry feel of sardines.

Spicy hot sauces from Steinhauer.

Fig syrup from Baku in Azerbaijan.

Bublik.sg

Premium olive oil from olives grown in the Absheron Peninsula (jutting into the Caspian Sea) of Azerbaijan.

Hosyaushka sunflower oil manufactured in Ukraine.

Borjomi naturally carbonated mineral water from Georgia. It tastes refreshing and has a perky fizz.

Russian style ice cream from Germany.

When you go to Bublik.sg now, you will be seeing more things than what I saw as Anna's stocks arrive.

If you are from Eastern Europe, visited or lived there before, or simply just being curious, you can drop by to reconnect with fine foods at Bublik.sg
