Malacca Bunga Raya Popiah Choon Hing • Praise the Lard!

I've been told many times to eat the famous popiah (Chinese hand roll) in Malacca. I have it as a mental note but never really sought it out.

Anyway, stumbled upon Bunga Raya Popiah while wandering around randomly, consciously avoiding Jonker Street and its surrounds.

The Ant Man billboard also caught my eye 🐜🤭

Wasn't sure if this was the Malacca popiah many people said I should try.

No queue. Have tummy space, why not right?

It's a big, fat hand roll. RM7, the equivalent of a bowl of noodles in Malacca.

They wrap it in paper like a burrito or Subway sandwich and don't cut it into sections (as the contents would spill all over). Takeaway only, no dining in.

The house made popiah skin was thin and soft, breaks easily. Yes, Bunga Raya founded by the current owners' great grandfather is a century old stall and they still make their own popiah skin.

The fillings were substantial but loosely packed. Mostly 芒光 mang kuang (yam bean) stewed in sweet savoury soy sauce till soft. A bit of egg and tau kwa (bean curd) mash. Moist almost wet though not soggy. The mang kuang was a little softer than I like, verging on mushy. With sweet sauce, the popiah tasted mildly sweet savoury at just the intensity I like. Has option for chili sauce which I had - it just added a bit of mild heat.

I didn't have any bean sprout in my popiah, though I would love it as I am a taugeh lover - it would add some juicy crunch to the soft popiah.

The popiah was huge and a full meal even for the average guy.

I asked for more lard croutons and got it.

The croutons were bigger than peanut size, crunchy, and saturated with lard oil. The taste of lard was assertive with every greasy bite. This stall always fry their own pork lard.

Fantastic if you are a lard maniac 😂

Many of us are.

So yeah, this was the famous Bunga Raya Choon Hing pork lard popiah people are talking about. It was a street side stall outside Madam King's Mall along Jalan Bunga Raya and moved to its present location at Jalan Munshi Abdullah (steps apart) in Nov 2024.

The famous longkang siham stall is at the back lane off Jalan Bunga Raya.
