Goose is of course high on our Guangzhou agenda (as usual). We had a few this time, I will write them up one by one - but I am putting up 东园 first - some friends said they are waiting for my write ups for their own upcoming trips soon 🤣🤭
I couldn't find an English name for 东园广州味, so I shall name it Dong Yuan Guangzhou Flavours for this article. 东园广州味 is a chain with a few outlets in Guangzhou. They have been well received by the notoriously famously fastidious discerning palates of Guangzhou locals as the daily full house and long queues attest.
Here are other five geese places from my previous visits to Guangzhou 👈
Dong Yuan Guangzhou Flavours 东园广州味 is a huge restaurant with many sections from large halls to smaller private spaces like pavilions and rooms. Their menu has the full range of Cantonese cuisine and also dim sum.
But, Dong Yuan is a roast goose specialist. Their geese are 120 day old birds, weighing 6 kg each, delivered fresh to the restaurant everyday.
Dong Yuan's birds are freshly roasted with fruit tree wood. Dong Yuan guarantees that their geese are served not more than 45 minutes out of the oven. Price RMB349 or SGD67 a bird.
Dong Yuan is also known for their soups as Cantonese must have soup with their meals.
Our half bird 東園瓦窑果木烧鵝.
The golden brown bird was cut into large chunks. The skin was thin, crisp and bursted into warm savoury aromatic juices with every bite. The meat was spongy tender, moist, savoury from seasoning with subtle natural goose sweetness.
缤纷四季咕嚕肉 Ku Lou Yok, another Cantonese food icon.
Tender pork wrapped in crusty batter shell enveloped in savoury sweet tangy sauce.
客家煎酸豆购
Hakka style pan fried tofu with minced pork filling. We like the soft tofu, nice browned sear outside and sweet fresh minced pork. The tofu bricks were sitting on a bed of soft crunchy soy beans - I enjoyed the tasty tender beans as well as the flavour and aroma imparted to the tofu.
葱香又烧酥 Flaky baked pastry pie with moist roast pork filling.
韭黄鲜虾炸春卷 chive and prawn filled crispy fried spring roll.
大师傅生炒宁夏菜心 The necessary choy sum greens simply stir fried with oil, sauce and garlic.
For the obligatory carbs, we had beef hor fun 干炒牛河.
The rice noodles were thick, soft, sweet, well sauced and stir fried with savoury sauce but had little wok hei.
We enjoyed our roast goose so much that after our meal, realising that we still had some tummy space left, we ordered another ¼ portion 東園瓦窑果木烧鵝/下庄 🤭
Total bill for all the food and drinks was RMB571 or SGD110.
I shall be back, and next time I shall focus on the roast goose (get more) and get a soup as well. Ah... also get their dim sum (e.g. they have rice noodle in goose gravy which I need to come back for).
