Pulling into Sarikei town on the way to Sibu, Sarawak we went straight to Glory Cafe for their famous mee udang tom yam coconut. Heard so much about it 😁 We have been talking about it since the day we left Kuching.
We were on a 8-day Pan Borneo Highway self drive holiday. We like independent, self drive holidays because it give us freedom of the road plus we can choose off-the-beaten-track places we want to explore. It's more fun than generic itineraries planned and led by others 🤭
Anyway, so here we are at Glory Cafe kopitiam 荣光茶室 for their famous tom yam coconut prawn mee.
Glory Cafe is a typical gritty Malaysian style coffee shop - the kind of place I feel warm and comfortable soaking in the hyperlocal vibes and atmosphere.
There are a few different food stalls but most people are here for their famous tom yam coconut prawn mee.
We ordered both the original Hock Chew big prawn mee as well as the tom yam coconut version.
How shall we start?
Tried the original Hock Chew prawn noodle first to get the base line / benchmark taste.
It's large big head river prawns 大頭蝦, their fresh meat tender and sweet, and their rich crustacean umami infused the full bodied viscous soup thoroughly.
The thick yellow noodles were stir fried imparting some wok hei to the strands before the umami rich soup was poured over the noodles.
The Hock Chew prawn noodle was good.
Time to try the famous mee udang tom yam coconut.
It's the same fried yellow noodle with big river prawn 大頭蝦, but now soaking in a more complex stock of coconut water / milk with prawn umami, lime, kaffir lime leaves, lemongrass and spices.
The soup was rich and heavy, creamy. I can feel the weight of the coconut milk and water but its sweetness was mostly masked by sourness from the lime, a bit of spicy heat, taste of spices and aromatics such as kaffir lime leaves, lemongrass, etc. Then, there's the robust crustacean umami also making its presence felt.
Same yellow noodles but I wished they had stir fried them a bit more as they were soft and limp, and there was no wok hei.
There was choice of thin bee hoon, thick bee hoon, yellow noodle, and kway teow (broad rice noodle).
Same meaty crunchy prawn though it looked a lot smaller sans the shell and big head 🤭
I love coconut meat or pulp. So, this mee udang tom yam coconut comes with its own dessert 🤭 I scraped and ate up the meat in the coconut. Nice, happy ending.
I love coconut water and won't miss a chance to enjoy some more🌴
The meat or pulp was soft, smooth and sweet. Loaded with natural collagen to keep our skin soft and well toned 🤭
I love all things coconut. They also have chilled house made coconut pudding which was delicious and so refreshing. Not overly sweet too. Crave this now, thinking about it. Regret my small tummy and not much tolerance for sugar.
Of course, Sarikei is more than just mee udang tom yam coconut but this alone is worth the stopover between Kuching and Sibu on the Pan Borneo Highway. The coconut pudding is icing on the cake.
