Dropped by Hainanese Village hawker centre in Hougang this morning to try a newly opened fried carrot cake stall. 

The carrot cake is nice 👍

Blue Star Fried Hokkien Mee at Hainanese Village hawker centre is a local favourite among Hougang residents. It is fried Hokkien mee as I remember it from my childhood, okay.... sans the opeh wrap.

Ponggol Nasi Lemak @ Kovan ● Iconic Singapore Chinese Coconut Rice Since 1979

I have a friend who is constantly raving about Ponggol Nasi Lemak. I, on the other hand, am not a fan. Had it once in the 1990s at their Tanjong Katong outlet but never went back since. 

It felt too much like "chap cai png" except for rice cooked with coconut milk. "Chap cai png" was what I endured during the worst work day lunches when I had no time to enjoy my food at leisure because of pressing deadlines.

There are 3 or 4 wanton mee stalls at 209 Kovan hawker centre - the top two popular stalls are 51 Ming Fa WTM and Yi Shi Jia WTM. Maybe it was my luck - when I am in Kovan, 51 Ming Fa was always closed. So, I only blogged about Yi Shi Jia last year.

Whenever I stalk Kovan 209 Market & Food Centre, there's always a queue at Fa Ji Minced Meat Fishball Noodle. So, I joined the locals to find out what draws them to Fa Ji. It's soft al dente noodles enveloped in robust, old school savoury, spicy, lardy, tangy slick. No gimmicks, it builds a loyal following with comforting, familiar pleasure, yeah...., like an old habit or affordable addiction.

I was attracted to Yi Shi Jia Wanton Mee by the long queue at the stall and newspaper articles touting its "70-year-old recipe". As I am constantly on the look out for the taste of my childhood wanton mee, I just got to try it. Did I find what I was looking for at Yi Shi Jia?

We gathered at Yi Restaurant 奇味鸡煲 in Kovan for China style spicy hotpot. Aaron missed the spicy hotpots of Shanghai and Yi Restaurant was the nearest thing to those in China that he came across in Singapore.
