Updated 25 May 2019. When showing Singapore friends around Johor Bahru, we often stop by at Restoran Lapan Dua Dua 822 to enjoy their dang gui (Angelica root) herbal roast duck and also take away some back to Singapore.
Lapan Dua Dua 822 is a simple shop lot in Taman Ungku Tun Aminah. This is 822's 23rd year in the herbal roast duck business and business is growing from strength to strength (which speaks a lot about the popularity of their ducks).
Roast ducks hanging in the window. Business is brisk, so the window is constantly replenished with freshly roasted ducks.
Lapan Dua Dua 822 sells dang gui roast duck and also ginseng roast duck. (I have yet to try their ginseng roast duck.)
Inside the small, narrow shop lot, furnishings are typically bare bones but it does shield customers from the blazing sun outside.
Finally got the gentleman to laugh. He is always serious when chopping meat and explained to me before that focus is important for safety - which I agree absolutely.
As we were on a whole day food trail and already pretty full, we just ordered half a duck to taste.
Typically, tropical raised ducks are lean and lack that coat of gamey fat of English or Irish ducks (which I like).
No fat? No problem.
Lapan Dua Dua 822 managed to infuse the distinct dang gui herbal flavour deep into the duck meat. The meat chopped in large chunks was tender and slightly moist. The skin was roasted to golden brown with a slight crisp.
We all liked the dang gui duck so much that we could not resist ordering another half a bird even though we had a major dinner lined up straight after this.
Remember to also order at least one serving of this preserved vegetable 酸菜 to go with your dang gui roast duck. The vegetable is cooked and kept simmering in a broth of duck bones and feet. The vegetable is soft and saturated with a savoury sweet slightly tangy spicy flavour. It works great to "open your appetite" 開胃 as they say in Cantonese.

->> I love this dang gui roast duck because I like the herbal flavour of dang gui as well as duck, and Lapan Dua Dua roasts their golden brown birds very well. Pricing is reasonable too.
