Good Family (Ho Ho) Steamboat Johor Bahru JB Molek 好一家海鲜火锅餐厅 JK1430
At Good Family Steamboat, it's simple, no frills, no gimmicks, no pretense, just good, top quality, wholesome fresh food for the whole family in a clean, informal, comfortable environment. (Formerly Ho Ho Steamboat 好好火锅.)
Big round Formica tables, laid with flimsy thin rosy pink plastic sheets, gas burners, rubber hoses and big gas cylinders under the table. This is the type of old school steamboat place we used to bring the hungry kids after swimming lessons on weekends.
What we normally do, like most people at Chinese steamboat places - we will pick a standard set with a mix of ingredients based on the number of the people in the party. There is fish, prawn, tofu, dumplings, eggs and bit of vegetables.
One of Good Family's main selling points is their top quality, fresh ingredients.
Then, there are the popular side dishes.
Good Family Steamboat's popular fish noodles. When cooked, the fat fish noodles are light and bouncy to the bite. They taste of fresh fish with it's natural sweetness.
Fresh streaky Kurobuta "black" pork which is richer and sweeter than regular local pork.
In goes all the goodies. Give them a little push and let them tumble into the large pot of boiling broth. There is only one type of broth. Good Family Steamboat uses a light bodied broth made mainly with fish and soy bean.
There is no tom yam, no lip, tongue, mouth numbing mala 麻辣 and no yuan yan 鸳鸯. The idea is to let the natural flavours of the top quality, fresh ingredients show through the simple fish broth.
Let the hot pot chocked full of fresh goodies simmer for a while in the broth and it's own juices.
The food is ready in the steamy bubbly hot broth in a few minutes.
We further added scallop and pork paste, and squid paste.
Good Family only have these simple shallot oil and sambal chili dips. The chili dip is sharp spicy sour, and likable but I hardly used it because I just want to taste the fresh ingredients' natural flavours by themselves.
Free top up of fish broth is customary in traditional Chinese steamboat shops like Good Family.
Good Family serves various desserts such as this lovely coconut jelly.
->> A good family style, old school steamboat. No fancy frills, just top quality, fresh ingredients and simple fish broth in a clean and comfortable setting at friendly prices.
