Heng Long Bak Kut Teh in Tanjung Pinang. Bintan Island

During recent my 5-day trip to Tanjung Pinang (on Pulau Bintan), I saw that there were several bak kut teh shops at Jalan Potong Lembu - a popular area where locals go for eating and shopping. I can't fairly recommend any bak kut teh shop as we tried only Heng Long, but I did enjoy their BKT which was among the tastiest I've tried anywhere.

These four bak kut teh shops were within 300 metres of each other along Jalan Potong Lembu. Which one have you tried? What do you think?

Heng Long operates at two locations. From 7:00am till sold out at Jalan Potong Lembu and from 5:00pm till sold out at Rimba Jaya.

Heng Long bak kut teh boss, 陳陸和 Tan Long Hua has been selling BKT for nearly twenty years. He is personally at both day and night locations - a very hardworking man. 陳陸和 worked at his master's stall at the market before striking out on his own. His master learnt the art of bak kut teh in Singapore.

陳陸和 uses 溫體肉 i.e. fresh pork from pigs that are slaughtered in the morning and served just hours later on your table. This is also why I like bak kut teh in Johor Bahru as they too serve 溫體肉 that is never chilled or frozen.

陳陸和 brings the tea colour pork broth to boil and finishes the ribs, tail, intestines, liver, kidney, blood curd, etc in high heat before serving.

Heng Long's bak kut teh is served bubbling hot in a claypot.

The broth is tea coloured, light bodied but have suspended coagulates. Heng Long's broth resembled Johor's herbal bak kut teh more than the peppery Singapore variety.

The broth tasted well balanced savoury sweet with gentle herbal notes. The garlic added a subtle spiciness to the broth. I enjoyed it.

Buddy was so used to Singapore's peppery bak kut teh that he threw in chili padi and dusted the broth with white pepper. I must say it did add an interesting sharper spicy layer to the soup.

陳陸和's twenty years experience shows in his cooking skills. The ribs, pork belly, stomach, liver and pork blood curd were all done to the right doneness. Tender and I could taste the pork's natural sweetness in the juiciness.

Tanjung Pinang folks eat their bak kut teh with Chinese tea. Their favourite is Put Tee Hiong 不知香 by Pek Sin Choon from Singapore.

👉 If you are a bak kut teh fan visiting Tanjung Pinang, do try out at least one of the BKT shops here. They use super fresh 溫體肉 and Singaporeans may like to know that they serve pork blood curd. I would love to try more bak kut teh shops when I am next in Tanjung Pinang. So far, I've tried Heng Long at Jalan Potong Lembu and I liked it a lot.
