Nasi Ambang at Johor Bahru Sri Tebrau Market A B Rahmat Stall

✍️ 15 Jan 2026. Came back to Sri Tebrau Market to try the Wednesday nasi ambang at A B Rahmat stall.

So glad to see the friendly stall holders again.

They have different dishes every day. So far, I have tried only the Wednesday nasi ambang. Kaki kaki Cheryl told me that their Thursday nasi ayam is also very good. Noted that down to try next time 🙏

All the component dishes, precooked and laid out in the trays.

Freshly cooked rendang chicken joining the party.

For takeaway, the nasi ambang is packed in a traditional banana leaf cone shaped bundle - so charming.

RM8 serving of nasi ambang. Boiled white rice with sambal, kerisi (fried grated coconut), fried vegetables, and large piece of rendang chicken. I chose breast. (They also have wing and drumstick.)

Everything was nicely presented on a banana leaf and a white plate like in a good restaurant. No styrofoam or plastic lined brown paper (which I feel weren't environmentally friendly).

I asked for a glass of warm water and wasn't charged for it.

Let's head straight for that large piece of chicken breast.

The blanket of sambal was sweetish spicy. I like it.

The chicken breast though thick was tender and moist. It had a subtle fresh chicken sweetness. I like this too.

The kerisi (fried grated coconut pulp with palm sugar) was sweetish and went very well with the rice.

Simple fried green beans with tempeh, tau kuah and mung bean noodles (glass noodle). Provides the necessary vitamins and delicious too.

Salted fish was crisp, stiff chewy and only mildly salty. Provided nice balance to the sweetness of the other components.

Triple checked, double confirmed. This somewhat dingy hyperlocal stall serves good traditional Malay / Indonesian dishes like nasi ambang at very competitive prices.

✍ 7 Nov 2014.
The social media buzz about A.B. Rahmat stall's nasi ambang in Taman Sri Tebrau market has been ringing for a few weeks now. Nasi ambeng is available here only on Weds lunch time 11:00am to 2:00pm, so I am glad that I finally managed to get a taste of it today (after missing it a few times).

I arrived at A.B. Rahmat stall before 11:00am to avoid the infamous lunch crowd :D

Still, once the nasi ambang line opened, the action picked up very fast and soon all 5 staff were frenziedly packing for the growing line of customers.

Bumped into my friend Chee Siong who was ahead of me in the queue :-D  He was here to buy his usual 6 packets for his family.

Chee Siong later left this message on a Facebook foodie group, "大家要吃的这两个礼拜快快去吃,今天Tony Johor Kaki去拍照了,等他的blog一出,就要大排长龙咯."

"Those who want to try this (nasi ambang) should quickly go eat this within the next 2 weeks, today Tony Johor Kaki went to take photos already, once he blogged it, there will be a longer queue." LOL sorry :-p

This is the standard (default) RM5 (2014 price) serving with everything in, plus a splash of gravy.

And, everything was just nice.

The small fried fish and chicken fried in chili gravy.

The chicken though nice enough wasn't that spectacular as while the chili gravy was good spicy, the tender meat was quite flavourless.

These fried fish were winners. Crispy, sweet and savoury.

Crunchy fried vegetables and aromatic serundeng (fried grated coconut pulp).

A.B. Rahmat's sambal chili is a top draw. It was an addictive well balanced spicy, sweet and savoury blend. Stinging hot but not excessive.

There was also the option of this small salted fish (in place of the fried fish).

I didn't have the chance to speak with the lady boss that day as they were so busy.

Highly recommended.

->> A.B. Rahmat's nasi ambang is one of those meals that fill your stomach and still leave you hungry for more. All the elements from the fried chicken to the little crispy fish, crunchy vegetables and spicy sambal chili combine together deliciously.

The most famous nasi ambang in Johor Bahru is at Mat Corner in Bandar Baru Uda (I've been going there since 2012) 👈 click
