Made a detour off the North South Expressway to Tangkak town for another taste of the famous Kuang Fei beef noodles 东甲牛腩面. Kuang Fei has branches in KL, Malacca and Kluang. This restaurant in Tangkak is the founding shop.
After exiting the toll gate Exit 235 at Tangkak, head towards Tangkak town via Jalan Muar. Turn off at Jalan Solok when you see the Kuang Fei or Marrybrown fried chicken signboards. It's 15 minutes from the toll gate, driving leisurely.
Kuang Fei is at Jalan Solok, near the junction with Jalan Manja where the wet market is at.
Inside Kuang Fei, it's a typical laid back, simple, clean, cool and relaxing space. Ideal for a driving break actually. No need to content with crushing crowds or struggle to find a seat. Street side parking needs coupons, so remember to put to avoid fines.
My RM8 bowl of beef noodles with different cuts - beef brisket 牛腩, and tripe with generic kway teow (rice ribbon noodles). Just one bowl, I was driving alone. No choice, got to go to KL to run some urgent errands...... (Next time with kakis i.e. friends, I shall also order their tendons and house made beef balls as well.)
The tea coloured beef broth is clear and light bodied. It's mainly savoury salty with very slight herbal hints. I felt the flavour was a little flat. There was hardly any greasy slick at all - which is good. All natural bone broth - I couldn't detect MSG, so there should be little or none.
Kuang Fei is all about the beef. This beef.
The small pieces of beef are fresh, tender, juicy and rich with beefy flavour.
Lovely.
Would have been perfect for me if it was cut in more hefty, thick cubes of meat. Shall request for extra thick, more meaty cuts the next time I am here.
I love these freshly fried crispy golden brown shallots. There was a sprinkling of chopped scallion and salted cabbage (kiam chye 咸菜).
I didn't use chili sauce and white vinegar at all as I wanted to enjoy the beefy beef without any interfering flavours.
👍 Beef noodle lovers will find the short detour for the famous Kuang Fei beef noodles worthwhile. It's also a good stop for a light meal between JB and KL. If you are a foodie, visiting Kuang Fei founder's shop (now run by the second generation), should also be interesting.

Went for lunch today. Full house due to public holiday. Disappointing. Not worth a detour. Broth watery. Beef slightly tasteless. Koay teow not properly cooked. The chili is nice. Will need to try another day when they are not that busy
