Mee Rebus House is just one year old and it is already establishing itself as an up and coming brand of mee rebus in Johor Bahru.

Mee Rebus House is set in a converted single storey detached house along Jalan Balau, near KSL, Holiday Plaza and Holiday Villa. So, it is highly accessible.

I like the bright, open, airy feel at Mee Rebus House with its high ceiling. The dining area opens to the lawn in front, so it's like eating in a garden. I like the rustic feel too as the 1960s vintage mosaic flooring is retained.

The furnishings are simple yet comfortable. The restaurant is very clean and well kept. It is family oriented with baby chairs and even a children's play area. It's like visiting a friend's home than a restaurant.

Owner Aminah is a talented and passionate chef. She created the recipe for her mee rebus supported by her family and friends as involuntary tasters. They went through many rounds of mee rebus tastings before deciding on the recipe with the most widely appealing taste profile 😄 Being Anak Johor (born and raised Johorean), Aminah's mee rebus has the Johor mee rebus DNA.

When you arrive at Mee Rebus House, go to the kitchen counter at the front to order your food.

The first thing that grabbed my attention at the counter was this stack that looked like giant pieces of fried crispy pancakes. It's penaram for the crispy topping, I am told.

Mee Rebus House is a mee rebus specialist. There is the basic mee rebus order (biasa). Then, we can add sides like lamb shank (tulang), fried chicken (ayam), beef (daging), fried prawns (udang), fried squid (sotong), shank with ball joint (Gearbox), and fried quail (puyuh).

The friendly staff will cook your order which you will take back to your table. Payment is at the cashier after eating, bringing along your order slip.

As this was my second breakfast this morning, I had just the basic mee rebus (biasa). Price is RM7. Next time, I shall try the side dishes.

Mee rebus may look like a simple noodle dish with sauce but it is full of flavour and aroma when it is done well, like at Mee Rebus House.

The noodles were done just right, tender with a subtle firmness. The sauce was heavy and thick with a soft graininess from thoroughly boiled crushed groundnuts. The thick sauce tasted mildly savoury from shrimps with a blend of gentle spices such as turmeric. No beef is used in the sauce.

The crispy fried shallots and crisps (penaram) added savoury aromatic accents to the dish. The chopped coriander, green chili pepper and half a lime gave the dish bit of refreshing zest. I appreciate it that all the ingredients in the mee rebus are fresh.

Mee Rebus House's signature crisp (penaram) is made with a blend of flour and shrimps. It is crushed and sprinkled on top of the mee rebus. The savoury crisps really made the dish of tender noodles and thick gooey sauce more interesting and delicious.

👉 I enjoyed Mee Rebus House's mee rebus and would love to be back to try their side dishes. This mee rebus feels very filling because of the amount of noodles and heavy thick nutty sauce. I heard that their nasi lemak is also excellent.
