How much do Taiwanese love oyster mee sua (rice noodles)?
Some people say that any Taiwanese who does not enjoy oyster mee sua, cannot claim to be one 😄 Oyster mee sua stalls and shops are everywhere in Taiwan. Many are very famous and everyone has their own personal favourites.
This humble little shop 台西港蚵仔麵線 in Taipei's Neihu District serves over 500 bowls of the noodles a day (2011) and counts popular actress / TV host / singer 苗可麗 as one of its ardent fans.
台西港 serves a fully loaded oyster mee sua - in every bowl there are fresh oysters, braised pork intestines and blanched fresh lean pork. 台西港 also serves it at a very competitive price (NT$40 in 2011).
Owner 陳良國 uses 尚青 (freshest) large, plump oysters which he washes before tossing in equal parts of potato and tapioca flour. The powder coat keeps the oyster soft and juicy inside after cooking, and slippery smooth outside.
The taste of dried bonito is strong in the sticky broth thickened with potato and tapioca flour.
The hand made mee sua dissolves slightly, melding together with the savoury starchy broth. The savoury sweet noodles though soft still have a bit of spring to the bite.
Customers enjoy 台西港's oyster mee sua with their spicy house made chili sauce.
台西港 is also popular for their 甜不辣 (radish, pork blood curd, tofu, fish cake etc with sweet sauce) and rice cake which are eaten as a set together with the oyster mee sua (set costs NT$115 in 2011) - that's too much food for me 😱
