Ho Meng Kee, founded in the 1930s, is one of the stalwarts of Johor Bahru wanton mee. Today, Ho Meng Kee is a leading wanton mee manufacturer and wholesaler, supplying many wanton noodle stalls in JB. There seemed to be at least one Ho Meng Kee WTM stall in every Taman (residential district) in JB.
This rainy morning, I popped by at the Ho Meng Kee stall at Queen Park coffee shop in Taman Perling. Queen Park has many small food stalls operating morning, day and night, so it is very popular with residents around Perling.
This stall is run by Ah Xiong 阿雄 who is third generation Ho Meng Kee. Ah Xiong has been working at the stall since he was 8 years old.
Though every Ho Meng Kee stall uses the same noodles, their wanton mee all tastes slightly different as they all cooked the noodles and blend the sauces slightly differently.
I like Ah Xiong's stall because he cooks the noodles to a light tender crunch. Ho Meng Kee noodles are made with duck eggs and flour only for more flavour and crunch.
I also like Ah Xiong's blend of sauces - lard, aromatic oil (infused with fried shallot), soy sauce and a bit of Ho Meng Kee's house blend chili sauce. The tossing sauce is just mildly savoury with a gentle spicy note. There is a slight zestiness in the chili sauce.
I like those Ho Meng Kee stalls that do their wanton mee this way. Personally, I must eat HMK noodles together with their house blended chili sauce.
The char siew, wantons and soup were unremarkable, they were alright but I am here for the springy duck egg noodles and tasty sauce 😄
