One of the main things I wanted to score for this trip to Ipoh was a good chicken rice as Ipoh has the best reputation for chicken rice in Malaysia. Pak Kong Chicken Rice 白宫鸡饭 was recommended to me by Barry the owner of Mama Noodles Cafe (where I just had breakfast).
Pak Kong is popular mainly with locals even though it is located in the tourist belt in the downtown core. Pak Kong has been around for over half a century. It was full house during lunch despite all the big chicken rice names just around the corner.
My solo lunch of chicken drumstick and char siew with rice and soup.
The drumstick was served deboned and in large chunks. The fresh meat was tender, smooth and juicy. The juices had subtle natural chicky sweetness. The skin was smoother and had more chicky flavour. I enjoyed Pak Kong's poached chicken.
The chicken sat on a shallow pool of tasty blend of dark soy sauce, light soy sauce and aromatic oil. But, I prefer to eat my poached chicken neat to savour the subtle natural chicky sweetness.
I requested for the fatty cut of char siew (but it came out only slightly fat).
Pak Kong's char siew lean meat was tender and moist with natural sweetness. The fat was juicier and sweeter. The caramelised savoury sweet marinade outside added more flavour and a toasty note to the char siew. I like Pak Kong's char siew a lot.
The rice had a nice tender nutty texture but the flavour and aroma were subtle. It's actually at the right level to complement the chicken.
The soup (haam choy tong) made with salted vegetable was a tad too salty and flat tasting for me.
👉 I like this simple, no frills, low profile but very busy chicken rice shop. Pak Kong Chicken Rice is well liked by locals. The chicken and char siew were deliciously simple and nice - flavours were moderately intense and well balanced. I felt the food had quite a bit of finesse despite the busy kopitiam setting. Service was friendly and efficient, and prices were reasonable.
