Lim Beef Mee. JB Sri Tebrau Beef Noodle Stall that Opens Weekends Only

I've heard a lot about Lim Beef Mee 老林牛腩面 in Sri Tebrau Hawker Centre but didn't have a chance to try it until last night as this stall opens on Saturday and Sunday only, and they sometimes have unscheduled off days 😂

Sri Tebrau Hawker Centre is nearly 40 years but looked older. There are about 100 hawkers hare, some are with Sri Tebrau HC since it opened in the 1980s. Though its heydays of the 1990s were over, Sri Tebrau HC is still popular with regulars.

Lim Beef Mee is one of the stalwarts here at Sri Tebrau Hawker Centre. Lim Beef Mee started in Pasar Kia over 40 years ago. It then moved to a coffee shop in Merlin Tower. The stall moved here about 30 years ago when the hawker centre opened.

The Lim couple still runs the stall but nowadays only on Saturday and Sunday, and sometimes will close for short holidays.

The Lims' children are all grown up now. They are running the stall to keep active and stay in contact with their long time regulars.

Lim Beef Mee serves the dry (RM10) and soup (RM9) version of beef noodles. Some are fans of dry and some of soup - (Yes, I can hear some of you say "Alamak... of course lah... why you so redundant one... .")

I prefer the dry version because they come with this signature gooey thick black sauce.

The noodles (I chose kway teow) come topped with stewed minced beef and the signature mildly savoury beefy sauce.

I enjoyed these kway teow enveloped with savoury beefy goodness after a good toss.

The accompanying soup was filled with small pieces of beef and tripe inside. The soup was light bodied and had layers of mild savouriness from the salted mustard (kiam chye) and beef. The tender pieces of beef and tripe released a bit of gentle beefy sweetness when we chewed them.

👉 Forty year old Lim Beef Mee 老林牛腩面 is the oldest beef noodle stall and the Lims are among the oldest hawkers of Johor Bahru. Available only on weekends, it's a good stall to try when you are at the old Sri Tebrau Hawker Centre.

  1. Waited until today to taste it. Had both the soup and dry versions. Insipid dry version in my opinion with little taste imparted by the scanty black sauce and mince beef in my opinion. Very lightly flavoured soup but beef pieces were tender. Is it worth waiting until the weekend ti eat this? Not 8ny honest opinion.
