Stumbled upon a street side stall at Jalan Harmonium 9 which is popular for their crystal skin Teochew kuih. This is less than 5 minutes by car from IKEA and AEON Tebrau in Johor Bahru.
Nancy and her family have been hand making crystal skin kuih and selling them here at Jalan Harmonium 9 for a decade.
Nancy starts making the kuih before day break and by the time they arrive at the street side stall it is around 11am. The more popular kueh are usually sold out within a couple of hours. (Off day is on Wednesday.)
Nancy makes her kuih skin with gluten free wheat starch or 澄面粉 which gives it a transparent or translucent look. The skin is thin and have a subtle tender chewiness which is firmer than rice flour skin.
Nancy also has various sweet and savoury ang ku kueh 紅龜粿 (which literally means red tortoise cake because it is named after its shape which is like a tortoise shell).
We took home an assortment of savoury kuih - my usual choice of filling are mung kuang 茫光 (jicama or turnip), chives 韭菜 and glutinous rice kuih 潮州饭粿.
Nancy's kuih are generously packed with well cooked fresh ingredients. They tasted mildly savoury balanced with the ingredients' natural flavour (aromatic chives or sweet mung kwang).
笋粿 Soon Kuih filled with savoury sweet stewed mung kwang (and a bit of carrot).
We brought home some ang ku kueh too.
The thick and soft wheat flour skin wrapped a generous filling of sweetened mung bean paste.
