Buddy Milton has been looking for the best curry puff in Singapore. One of the best he has found so far is Er Jie Curry Puff (still under the media radar in 2018) located at the basement of Golden Mile Tower.
Er Jie also known as Ngoh Curry Puff operates inside Dessert House which is an "economic rice" shop. Ngoh Curry Puff operates only from 4pm to 6pm - it took us a few visits before we got a chance to taste their curry puff (they sell curry puffs for just 2 hours a day and is closed on Sunday).
Ngoh Curry Puff start to make their curry puffs after 3pm and it's almost 4pm when the first batch is ready.
From kneading and rolling the pastry dough to packing it with curry potatoes etc, to deep frying the curry puffs - everything is done by hand.
I like it that the curry puffs were fried with fresh clean oil.
We were here before 3pm, before they started to make the curry puffs. We sat back and waited with our coffee, but a queue quickly formed when they started to fry the curry puffs. We didn't realise that there were lots of other people waiting like us, nursing their drinks 😂 Ngoh Curry Puff is under the media radar but it has a following.
Pro Tip: Place you orders with Er Jie Curry Puff once you are here 😄
The hand made curry puffs fried till golden brown were irregular in shape and they were not pretty. But, I like my food this way - with character and personality.
We bought a small "bouquet" of curry puffs, each packed in a small paper bag. Price $1.50 each (2018 price). There is only one flavour - curried potatoes with chicken.
You can see the golden brown layers of crispness and flakiness outside.
The shell was thin, crispy and flaky. So, we don't have to have curry puffs with doughy shells as thick as pot pie crust 😛 (You know that one neh 😂 )
The crispy pocket was generously filled with curried potatoes, cubes of tender boiled chicken and a wedge of boiled egg. The filling had the right moistness for me. The flavour was mildly sweet spicy - it's nice though I would love it more if the spice flavour was a little more robust. (I saw some people eating the curry puffs with sambal chili from the economic rice shop 😄 ).
👉 From now on, every time I am near Golden Mile Tower between 4pm to 6pm on Monday to Saturday, I will pop by Ngoh Curry Puff at Dessert House for a crispy curry puff or two 😋
