Good Food, Good Value. Tanba Japanese BBQ Buffet in Johor Bahru 炭馬日式烧肉 ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I first visited 炭馬日式烧肉 Tanba Japanese BBQ buffet at Twin Galaxy in JB last year for an invited tasting. Today, I came back with friends as a paying customer and am glad to recommend Tanba to you.

The interior of Tanba was comfortable (not much changed since my visit last year). It still had traces of its previous life as a night club with stage and all before it was converted to a Japanese BBQ restaurant.

I snapped a copy of the menu. The good news is the range of food for the buffet was extensive.

The bad news is the huge range of items can seem daunting at first glance. The trick is to order a few items straightaway to buy time to study the menu, then order subsequent rounds. It's all you can eat ala carte buffet - you just tick off the checklist in the order chit and the staff will serve your orders at your table. The staff were friendly and helpful - they gladly assisted us in making our orders.

Basically there were different cuts of beef (karubi, short rib, tongue) and pork (belly, shoulder, neck, tendon), chicken, ostrich and lamb (shank). They come in 4 types of marination - sweet sauce, Sichuan mala, Korean spicy and black pepper.

There were also seafood like tiger prawns and scallops, bacon, otsumami (Japanese small plates), agemono (Japanese fried items), vegetables, salad, sushi, sashimi, temaki, rice dishes, dessert etc etc.

Each table was equipped with a table top charcoal stove. The fumes were ducted away by suction, so our hair and clothes did not smell like smokey char siew 😄

Part of our first round of orders 😄

I thought we over ordered our first round. We ran out of space on the table and had to put some spillovers on the divider behind us 😄

We had many different cuts of beef and pork with different marinades. The meat were all of good quality.

It was very easy and fun to cook the meat ourselves over the charcoal stove. The meat cooked quickly as they were sliced thin.

Different marinades but I can always taste the natural sweetness of the meat. There were several dipping sauces provided but I didn't even bother to check what they were as the natural flavour of all the meat was so good!

One plate followed by another and before we knew it, we were done with the first round. We enjoyed ourselves a lot - grilling, chatting, laughing, eating the leisurely afternoon away. Pay one price, eat all you like from the menu, without a care in the world - enjoying good food with friends is one of life's blessings.

For round two we had two servings of sashimi salmon, salmon belly, tuna and white tuna. They were good enough for us to wipe out two servings.

We each had a fried soft shell crab temaki. It was good too.

Couldn't resist a serving of fried fish skin when I saw it in the menu. It's lightly battered fish skin fried to a crisp, lightly dressed with a dribble of savoury sweet sauce. I like this fried fish - actually, I prefer this natural tasting fried fish skin than those with fanciful add on flavours like salted egg yolk, tom yam etc etc.

We could go on and on, but we were 110% full already, so we left fully satisfied - but, not before 2 scoops of creamy matcha green tea ice cream each 😄

4-Star (out of 5). We enjoyed ourselves a lot at Tanba Japanese BBQ buffet. The food was tasty. I feel the quality of ingredients was good for the all-you-can-eat price we paid. The environment was comfortable. The service staff was responsive and helpful.
