We were regulars at Kee Kee Bentong Chicken Rice stall near Kelana Jaya LRT station (in Petaling Jaya near Kuala Lumpur). Most Saturday afternoons, we brought the kids here after their taekwondo class. We love the succulent, tender, smooth, juicy, sweet tasting poached chicken here.
But, in those days decades before I started this blog, I often do not pay attention to the names of our favourite stalls. We have a private "codename" for this stall - we called it "hot pants chicken rice" because the stall owner's teenage daughter helped out at the stall in her hot pants 😄
Twenty years on, how are we going to find our favourite stall now? Is it still in business? I wondered.
Fortunately, I remembered 2 things about this stall - it is near Kelana Jaya LRT station and it uses Bentong chicken.
So, when I searched in WAZE app "Kelana Jaya Bentong Chicken", Kee Kee Bentong Chicken Rice came up right away. Checking it against the map, I double confirmed that Kee Kee is our "hot pants chicken rice" 😄
Thanks to technology, finding our long lost favourite chicken rice stall was a breeze.
Kee Kee Bentong Chicken Rice is almost the same as I remembered it from 20 years ago. The corner restaurant in Petaling Jaya's People's Park is always packed full with office workers and neighbourhood folks during lunch.
Boss Mr. Lim hails from... where else... Bentong, Perak. He has been in the chicken rice business for over 30 years and is 25 years at this current location. We stumbled upon his stall while prowling Petaling Jaya for food 20 years ago and were regulars till we left KL in 2003.
Two of us, we had half a bird, rice and bean sprouts (which came to RM31 altogether). The kat chai shin mui (sour plum and lime juice) and sha lei (buah long long juice) we got separately from the drinks stall. The tofu from Yat Yeh Hing zhi char stall (costs RM10).
The half bird came in a large heap of beautiful yellow hued chicken chopped in large chunks (the way I like it). Kee Kee's chicken are corn feed, huge and they come from Bentong (near Ipoh, Perak). Bigger bird means more meat, more flavour.
The chicken was poached to just perfect doneness (with a teeny bit of pink in the marrow). It was oh.. so... tender, juicy and smooooth.... with jellied visceral fat. This is among the smoothest, most tender, juiciest chicken I've eaten anywhere in Singapore and Malaysia. The chicken meat tasted mildly naturally sweet with the watery dressing sauce providing the complementary savoury balance.
Amazingly, Kee Kee's chicken tasted exactly the way I remembered it from 20 years ago. Talking about consistency and maintaining standards, Kee Kee is a role model.
Simple crunchy blanched bean sprouts dressed with mildly savoury light soy sauce.
A nice optional side from Yat Yeh Hing zhi char. Their staff will come to your table to ask if you like to have their tofu. Fried to a brown crisp outside, tenderly soft inside and dressed with a mix of stewed minced pork, chai poh and chopped scallion.
Kee Kee is not so strong in the rice department. The broken grains were lumpy, a bit dry, and doesn't have much flavour except a bit of sweetness.
The chili sauce come with grated ginger and chicken stock - it has a layered mild spicy hot taste with savoury sweet chicky base.
One thing I like about Kee Kee is the self service free flow of chicken feet and groundnut soup cooked with preserved vegetables.
Refreshing zesty kat chai shin mui (sour plum and lime juice) and sha lei (buah long long juice) which are thirst quenching and appetising at the same time.
Recommended for you 👍 Twenty years already, Kee Kee Bentong is still one of my favourite places for chicken rice because I love their super smooth, tender, juicy and naturally sweet chicken. (Forgot to order their glass chicken feet and intestines this round 😂 )

ReplyDeleteI thought Bentong is in Pahang?
ReplyDeleteBentong is a 250km drive from Ipoh and is in Pahang. Unless there's another town with the same name near Ipoh.
ReplyDeleteYo Tony - was there a "hot pants" aunty there :-)
