Mee Hoon Kueh with Fried Fish in Johor Jaya Hawker Centre • Ong Yoke Ying Stall 佳佳咖啡店

Wandering around Johor Jaya, I stumbled upon customers enjoying this mee hoon kueh and fried fish nugget combo. Curious, I went to order for myself but it was sold out  It was almost 2pm then.

Stall name: Ong Yoke Ying  佳佳咖啡店

Address: Taman Johor Jaya hawker centre, Jalan Dedap 20, 81100 Johor Bahru, Johor

Tel: 016 722 8033

Hours: 8:30am - 4:00pm (Mon off)

Determined to try it, I came back the next day at 9am. The friendly stall holders remembered the uncle who came yesterday but didn't get to eat 😬

There were soup or dry versions. I opted for soup. This mee hoon kueh and fried fish nugget combo for RM8.50.

A quick survey, everything was freshly made from the kueh to fried anchovies to shallots 💪

The savoury clear soup came tongue scathing hot, driving the mani chai's green taste into it. I like the soup's savoury and mani chai (sayur manis) taste. As I ate, the soup became infused with anchovy and fried shallot flavours. The soup was not bad.

For mee hoon kueh, I am a bit of a Nazi. Have mani cai = 👍, no mani cai = 👎.  In this case, I wished there was a little bit more of the chewy vegetable.

The kueh was slippery smooth. I had a lot of difficulty picking this up for this picture - it kept slipping off my chopsticks.

The hand torn kueh were of irregular shape, uneven thickness but generally thick which I like. In the mouth, the thick kueh was tender, spongy chewy to the bite. It had a very homely, old school feel. The flour and dough were made right there at the little stall, so it had a nice wheat and fresh dough taste. It is one of the best kueh around in JB or Singapore. The mild tasting clear soup complemented the kueh allowing its subtle flavours to show.

Though pale looking, the fish nuggets were very well fried. The batter was light and crisp. Though it was just bland dory fish, it paired well with the mee hoon kueh, giving the dish extra texture and a little more varied flavour. Locals like it and it is the other half of the stall's signature combo.

If you are looking for a light brekky or are a mee hoon kueh fan, can check out Ong Yoke Ying in Johor Jaya.
