Friends mentioned a good chicken porridge shop along Jalan Harimau before but it was only today that we stumbled upon it while exploring food stalls around KSL Mall.
Sun Yau Kee 新友記 opens only at 4:30pm and I am rarely in this area around that time.
There were fried and poached chicken, but what really thrilled me was the bunch of fried pork intestines hanging in the window like a bunch of withered grapes.
Congee (rice porridge) is a staple in Cantonese homes and my favourite way of eating the soft rice gruel is with crispy fried pork intestines 炸肠猪. But, this Cantonese comfort dish is rarely found in Singapore or JB which have Hokkien and Teochew majorities respectively.
Mrs. Fong and her hubby have been running Sun Yau Kee with a team of cheerful staff for nearly 30 years.
Six of us, we ordered 3 bowls of congee to try (as we have been food hunting since the morning).
The rice porridge felt heavy. Most of the rice grains have melted from hours of boiling and it felt almost creamy in the mouth. "Cottony" 棉棉 is the way Cantonese describe it.
The congee is made with chicken stock, and chicken and pork bones which add layers of sweetness to the sweet rice.
Buried in the tongue scathing hot congee (be very careful!), there were strips of spongy boiled pork maw and small pork intestines. The congee is given a teaspoon of aromatic fried shallot infused oil 熟油 and fresh spring onion garnish.
Then, there were crispy savoury fried pork large intestines.
Sun Yau Kee congee's combination of soft and crisp textures, and balance of gentle sweet and savoury flavours is among the best 炸肠粥 that I have ever tasted.
We were all wowed by it.
(There is a set of usual soy sauce and white pepper on each table. Make sure you tasted the congee before adding the condiments. Try out the finely balanced flavours before changing its taste profile with soy sauce and pepper. I didn't touch the condiments at all as I like the congee as it is.)
Of course, we had extra fried pork intestines 😄
Next time, I shall try Sun Yau Kee's chicken rice.

If you are here in the mornings, in Restoran Multi Mart coffee shop, there is a popular Hainanese porridge stall. Check it out if you are in the area early. It's along the same row of shophouses as Sin Yau Kee 👈 click

Where is this stall located at KSL? Is it along the stretch of famous Soon Soon Heng BKT?
ReplyDeleteNo. It is along same stretch as Pontian Wanton Mee....
DeleteThey used to be located a few doors away next to the temple. Than they were not alone and used to share that lot with another stall. Just can't recall what that stall was selling.
ReplyDeleteAny MSG added to the porridge and is it small or big portion for the porridge?
ReplyDeleteno sure about MSG but i didn't taste any. it's the small portion.
