Johor Laksa | 2, Jalan Ledang, Taman Johor, 81200 Johor Bahru ⏰ 7:30am - 1pm |
Haven't tried this Johore style curry laksa which has been operating in Taman Johor hawker centre for over twenty years.
I couldn't find this stall on Google. It is also not listed on Google Map, at the moment.
Taman Johor hawker centre has passed its heyday but stalwarts like Mee Itek San Kee and Johor Laksa are still holding the fort.
The RM7 serving of noodles in curry topped with tau pok, fried bean curd skin, egg, fried fish ball, blood cockles, and chopped daun kasum. Comes with a small dish of sambal.
The curry was thick, creamy with coconut milk. Infused with curry spices which were mild and balanced but there was an underlying salty taste.
Choice of yellow noodles or thin bee hoon (rice vermicelli). I picked a mix of both which worked really well together. I like the spongy springy tender bite of yellow noodles and the full coconut and spice flavours from the bee hoon which did a good job of sponging up the curry.
Compared to Singapore's Katong laksa, Johor's curry laksa has more toppings. All complemented each other as well as the curry and noodles well as a harmonious blend of flavours and textures. It's the same combo of ingredients as other Johor laksa stalls.
(I asked if they are related to the Cathay Laksa and Lee Kee clan, and was told they are not.)
The Yeo family which run this stall peel their own live cockles. This ensures the cockles are fresher compared to those that come shelled (dead and chilled) in bags.
They were quite generous with the blood cockles. I asked for them to be cooked to well doneness.
The Yeo's rendition of Johor laksa has daun kasum while the other vendors (Cathay, Lee Kee, etc) don't have. The aromatic leaves add their flavour and fragrance which I appreciate.
The Yeos make their own sambal with many spices including torch ginger flower.

Being listed on JOHOR KAKI Blog makes it more exclusive then being listed on Google.... at least we know this hidden secret now 😆
ReplyDeleteWhich do you prefer between this one and the Tampoi one? Both look pretty good!
