Pande Egi Babi Guling in Gianyar • One of Bali's Best According to Locals

My trips to Bali always have the Bali food icon babi guling on the agenda ๐Ÿ˜ฌ Our buddy Budi, who is born and raised in Bali brought us to Pande Egi Babi Guling in Gianyar, which is about 30 minutes drive north from the Ubud tourist hub.

Restaurant name: Warung Babi Guling Pande Egi

Address: Banjar Pande, Beng, Kec. Gianyar, Kabupaten Gianyar, Bali 80513, Indonesia

Tel: +62 878 8332 8808

Hours: 8:00am - 9:00pm

Pande Egi is a beautiful bright spacious airy restaurant overlooking lush padi fields on one side. We were here before the meal time peak, so we had the luxury of choosing where we like to sit ๐Ÿ˜€ Comfortable, sturdy chairs ๐Ÿ‘

By the time we finished eating, the restaurant was fully packed ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

Pande Egi's babi guling menu is simple - everything on one page.

The most expensive item Paket Special costs Rp36,000 (SGD$3). That's the price of a latte in Ubud!

That makes decisions easy. Just go for Paket Special as it has everything ๐Ÿ˜€

Our food is here ๐Ÿ˜€ Warm, friendly, efficient service!

My Rp36,000 (S$3) Special has generous portions of everything - crispy skin, tender meat, sausage, salad, vegetables and rice.

First things first. Pande Egi gave more crisp crackly skin than the babi guling shops downtown. Beneath the shatteringly crisp golden brown skin, a thin layer of melty fat saturated with savouriness and porcine sweetness bursts flavourful juices in the mouth with every crunchy bite. So shiok lah.

Woo... even the lean meat is baby soft, juicy and rich with savoury porcine sweetness and subtle spice flavours.

Sausage from blood and offal.

Get their satay. One thing I learned from this trip is Bali satay babi tastes good! Doesn't come with the familiar peanut and spice sauce but two types of sambal. Anyway, I just ate the savoury lightly spiced satay grilled meat sans the sauces. Tasty enough on its own.

The satay are freshly grilled over charcoal at the restaurant.

Nice savoury pork soup with banana stem to wash down that meat.

A truck brought in a freshly roasted pig.

Buddy Budi got us permission to visit Pande Egi's kitchen five minutes drive from the restaurant ๐Ÿ™

Live pigs are processed, grilled here over wood flames and sent to our tables, so everything is super fresh.

Making sausages.

The sausages are coiled around a rotating spit, then grilled over wood fire, like the pigs.

Making satay.

Pande Egi is my best babi guling experience to date. Shall look for more on future Bali trips.

Our total bill including fresh coconuts came to Rp191,000 which is a princely SGD$16.40. Thank you. Hope to be back soon ๐Ÿ˜Š

Where are your favourite babi guling places?

Indonesia has the world's largest Muslim population, so why is babi guling a food icon in Bali? Why do Balinese eat pork? ๐Ÿ‘ˆ click
