Happy Crab Geylang 蟹开心

You know, to me eating river prawn is a lot about the creamy head butter. Eating crab is the same. It's all about that terribly sinful 蟹膏 or tomalley and roe.

Happy Crab is a dingy little stall, actually half stall at a coffee shop at Geylang Lor 31.

Peter owns this stall. Actually, I tried Happy Crab's Teochew cold crab 冻蟹 over a decade ago at their previous location in Kampung Glam. I still remember that meal and the friends, so it must be quite nice though I forgot the details about the food already.

The Sri Lankan crabs today, about 400 - 500 grams each, steamed and basking in the spotlight in the window.

The steamed crabs were grilled over an electric grill and quartered on order.

The crabs were slathered with black pepper sauce and served with Wasabi & soy sauce, mayonnaise and sambal.

Happy Crab still offers traditional Teochew cold crab but we didn't order that this evening.

The grilled crab were nicely cut and cracked, so it was easy to get at the meat. They provided thin plastic gloves which were very convenient.

The crab was meaty and it was easy to get the flesh out even with just one hand, while keeping the other hand free and available for the camera.

The moist tender white meat and creamy tomalley & roe (often called crab caviar) were fresh, sweet and clean tasting despite its umami richness. There was quite a lot to eat despite the shell which is the nature of eating crabs.

The gills were not removed, so do be careful to get rid of it yourself.

I like all the three dips provided, especially the creamy mayonnaise because its sweet sour flavour complements the crab's sweet umami taste well.

$45 a pop. It's an occasional indulgence with beer and good company. At least, it is delicious.

After crab, we popped over to the next lorong for Kwong Satay at Lor 27A.
