The famous la la bee hoon at Lai Foong coffee shop near KL Chinatown was a social media sensation a few years ago. I finally tried it today after the hype long subsided - I generally don't rush in but wait for the dust to settle 😅 In the meantime, the humble la la noodle stall got listed in KL's Michelin guide and spawned a couple of full size restaurants.
The la la noodles stall is in this large orange colour building between the Central Market and Petaling Street (Chinatown). Lai Foong coffee shop is at the ground level - the famous beef noodle stall is also here.
I like the rustic, grimy, vintage feel of Lai Foong coffee shop. Reminds me of coffee shops in old 1960s Singapore.
If you look for a la la noodle stall at Lai Foong, there is none 🤭
It is actually a "no signboard" stall selling an assortment of fried rice and noodle dishes, with la la soup as one of the items on their menu.
Turns out, their top seller and claim to fame is the la la soup and noodle.
The la la soup / noodle is finished on order with generous doses of ginger, seafood stock, Chinese cooking wine, and la la clams.
Our RM17, minimum serving of la la bee hoon soup.
The soup was robustly savoury with seafood type umami, strong ginger and Chinese wine taste. Folks who grew up with this taste will love it, especially those who like it strong. The stir fried julienned ginger and Chinese cooking wine is a homely, comforting smell and taste, I am familiar with growing up.
Generous amount of albeit tiny la la clams - estimated almost 20. Sweet soft tender chewy. Very well cleaned. No sand was detected at all.
The obligatory carbs just picked up the soup and its flavours which also lubricated the slurpy strands.
Can lah... For that hyperlocal, homely soupy noodle feeling once in a while.
Come if you still haven't tried this. No need to queue, especially after the lunch rush hour.

ReplyDeleteWow Tony thank you for the information. I frequent the Jalan Sultan outlet for my La La Noodles and wondered why it is the same name as Kedai Kopi Lai Foong Jalan Tun HS Lee where I go for my beef noodles. Must try the La La Noodles at the original outlet like your goodself :-)
