Visited SaraNest in Kuching, Sarawak and learned how swiftlet or swallow bird nest is processed.
Swiftlets make these nests using their saliva which is rich in protein (though not in collagen as commonly believed).
When bird nests harvested from bird houses are brought into SaraNest, they have feathers and other impurities.
What follows at SaraNest is a meticulous precise process to turn the natural bird nest into a product traditionally sought after for its health benefits.
The first step is to soften the bird nests with slow running purified water. Only filtered water is used, no chemicals like bleach or additives.
The embedded impurities are painstakingly removed by eye and hand. One bit at a time, until only pure bird nest is left. This traditional handpick method is labour intensive, very hard work requiring lots of focus and dedication.
Amazing how much impurities there are in the bird nests.
The cleaned bird nests come out pure and white as snow but now soft as jelly, so it needs to be reformed.
The wet and cleaned bird nests are reformed (shaped), supported by plastic moulds. The shaped bird nests in moulds are then heat sterilised.
The bird nests are air dried purely by air flow using air conditioning, electric fans and dehumidifiers.
Dried cleaned bird nests.
Most of the nests' nutritional value is preserved by the pure air flow drying method.
The bird nests are then sorted, precisely weighed, individually cling wrapped, sealed and packed, some according to customers specifications. SaraNest process for other brands too as OEM.
Beautiful bird best according to customer's design.
The bird nest is made into soup, beverage / tonic, and snacks.
Since the 15th century, the Chinese have been importing bird nests from Southeast Asia. Bird nest is believed to strengthen our immune system, is anti-ageing, promotes skin health and complexion, supports brain cell development, cures coughs & asthma, fights fatigue / increases energy, etc.
