天香 永平手工鱼丸 Tian Xiang Fish Ball | 173, Jalan Harimau, Taman Century, 80250 Johor Bahru ☏ +6016 653 7383 ⏰ 7am - 3pm (Mon off) |
Stumbled upon Tian Xiang Yong Peng Fishball near KSL Mall in Taman Century, Johor Bahru.
The day was blistering hot, so I needed a cool refuge urgently.
The air conditioning in Tian Xiang made it easy for me to decide to park myself here. The vibes here were welcoming too with a steady flow of locals.
I tried to get someone's attention (to order) but was not successful.
Then, I realised that they have a QR code for their menu and ordering app. Not my favourite way of ordering, but their app worked pretty fast and smoothly, and was easy enough even for me to figure out 🤭
(Payment is at the counter, not via the app. Yeah, I actually prefer this than to punch in my credit card details into another app.)
The food came pretty quickly once the order was sent. I ordered the smallest serving set which came at RM9.50 nett (very competitive price for an air con place in 2025).
It was pretty basic - mound of noodles, soup with fish balls, etc - that's it, plus a small dish of chili paste.
Actually, that's all I wanted or needed at that moment as I was roaming from place to place in search of food.
The noodles were pretty simple. They were done soft tender with a subtle crunch, a notch softer than my ideal.
But, the strands picked up the lard oil, shallot oil and savoury sauce well, taking on their savoury lardy taste and smell. Scallion, and minced pork added their flavours and aromas.
I like their chili which greatly enhanced the taste when mixed with lard and savoury sauce, folding them into the noodles.
The noodles paired perfectly with the fishballs and soup.
The soup was clear as water but tastes savoury sweet. I enjoyed it with mouthfuls of savoury, lardy, spicy noodles.
The fish balls were good - soft tender spongy, when chewed, it broke into moist pieces that released the gentle balanced savoury sweetness of fresh fish.
Tian Xiang uses yellowtail fish 黄尾鱼, also known as potato fish 蕃薯鱼 or tofu fish 豆腐鱼. There were only three in the small serving set though.
Not mind blowing but I enjoyed the lardy soft crunchy noodles and the excellent fish balls. I'll be back and next time I shall have their popular fried fish cake and spicy curry laksa too. Actually, I can keep coming back and not feel bored, because the lardy noodles and fishballs are so comforting, filling and fulfilling.
Any fans here? I notice Tian Xiang have a loyal following.
