I was in Taman Molek running an errand when I stumbled upon a familiar brand, Ah Meng Kue Teow 亚明棵條. Ah Meng is a household name in the world of Teochew kway teow in Johor Bahru.
The Ah Meng branch with that familiar signboard has been at this corner shop in Taman Molek for the past 5 years - how did I missed it till now? 🤔 Okay... it's actually in a quiet corner backstreet.
Anyway, as a fan of Ah Meng Kue Teow, I quickly settled down to give this branch a try.
Compared to the slightly "modernised" parent shop, the Molek outlet had the more hyperlocal, gritty charm.
The menu, everything on one page. Every add-on was price listed - I guess many customers appreciate the transparency.
There's also the QR ordering option, if you like to minimise human interaction 🤭 I "don't know" how to use this 🤭
To keep things simple, I just ordered the RM15 mixed soup and kway teow noodles.
The soup was watery, nearly clear and clean cheng cheng 清清 savoury sweet tasting. Many JB old Teochew 老新山 like their food mild and clean tasting which thus demands ingredients to be fresh. (Though I am from Singapore, I think I have 老新山 tastebuds now 🤭 )
The kway teow was soft without breaking apart - I like this doneness and the clean tasting savoury sweet soup clinging to the slurpy smooth noodles.
The thinly yet crunchy sliced pork liver were fresh and done just right. A slight blush and almost no bleeding.
The single piece of soft crunchy pork kidney was beautifully cut, and nicely done too.
There were many pieces of white soft sweet tasting fish.
They were thick fresh slices of sea bass fish which were cut from whole fish at the shop.
More bony fish head, if you like it.
Succulent oysters for those who want to indulge themselves.
Lard croutons. Ask and you shall be given more 🤭😁
Boss 阿其, used to work for 亚明. As far as I could tell, 阿其 has kept faithfully close to the version by 亚明.
亚明 in turn is one of the disciples of Ah Hua, the original Teochew Kway Teow legend of Johor Bahru. Ah Hua's elder son is in Plentong now. Ah Hua's younger son's shop is near KSL. Ah Hua's former daughter-in-law is at Jalan Segget, near the original Ah Hua restaurant location.
They all have the Ah Hua DNA with slight variations. Catch them all, if you love Teochew kway teow.
Unrelated, Tua Thow at Jalan Tun Abdul Razak is in the same league, in my opinion.
Another which I like is Hua Heng in Johor Jaya.
