We had a quick coffee at the hotel, then dashed out to check out the famous Kuay Jab Mr Joe for breakfast.
Thai kuay jab's cousins are Singapore's kway chap, and Johor's kway teow kia. They are basically forms of the Teochew rice noodle dish with pork organ soup.
At the risk of over simplifying things, Singapore kway chap is more dark soy sauce based, Johor kway teow kia more Chinese spice based, and Thai kuay jab more peppery.
In Singapore, the rice noodles are flat sheets, in Johor slender ribbons, while in Thailand they are coiled rolls.
In Singapore and Johor, the offal are served "dry" separate from the soup while in Thailand, the offal are inside the soup.
All have pork offal but the Thai version, uniquely features crispy fried pork belly. Many people say Mr. Joe of Chan Road has the crispiest fried pork belly in Bangkok.
We dashed for it as we had only a small time window before the next arranged activity for the day 😂
Eight something AM, Mr Joe already buzzing with early birds.
Don't worry. Mr Joe has a huge spill over space standing by, ready for peak hour business. Clean and spacious, no air con but comfortable as the space was open and airy.
Squishy soft large intestines. Very well cleaned, so we tasted only savoury sweet flavours.
I like the spongy texture and savoury taste of pork lung.
Thai style fried pork belly is the hot seller and stand out item for most Mr Joe customers.
Crispy fried skin, tender moist meat and juicy fat. Savoury in layers, I didn't feel the need for the savoury sweet dark sauce.
I actually prefer dipping the fried pork belly in the soup. The soup wet the fried pork, soften and smoothen it just a little bit as well as added a subtle savoury layer of flavour. Still very crispy.
The coils of rice rolls were soft, slippery smooth, and tasted of rice sweetness.
Protein, carb, texture and flavour 😋 Complete and satisfying.
