Matang Seafood Porridge @ Taman Mount Austin, Johor Bahru

What a delicious seafood porridge discovery today in Taman Mount Austin!

The Teochew style seafood porridge at the famous Matang Seafood restaurant in Taman Mount Austin was such a delightful treat.

The popular restaurant located in a large corner shoplot was crowded at lunch time. There were office workers and also local residents from the surrounding Austin Heights residential area.

The porridge came piping hot, filled to the brim in a large clay bowl. Most of the ingredients were nearly invisible, submerged underneath the bubbling steaming seafood broth.

The rice grains were cooked only till soft (unlike Cantonese style congee where the rice grains are boiled into a gruel). The rice was soaking in the generous broth – each grain infused with the delightful flavour from the fresh ingredients and seafood broth.

Our porridge came with crab, squid, prawns, grouper fish slices, and Enoki mushrooms. You can also add other ingredients like shark meat and fish balls.

The broth and all the seafood ingredients blended into a naturally sweet umami savoury, flavourful treat. The key was all the ingredients were super fresh. I believe little artificial flavourings like MSG or sugar was added.

I couldn't resist slurping up the last drops in the bowl and saw many people tipping their large clay bowls to scoop up the broth.

The treat came to RM35 to feed two persons (2011 price).

I will definitely come back again with friends to enjoy this special treat.
