Ah Soon 亚顺肉骨茶 in Taman Sri Tebrau is typical of popular old established bak kut teh shops in Johor Bahru.
It has a constant stream of customers - like waves overflowing and spilling onto the sidewalks most of the time. At lunch and dinner, customers would have to wait for seats. Fortunately, service is very fast and efficient, and is cheery and friendly.
Ah Soon’s mainstay is its excellent bak kut teh 肉骨茶 but on this visit, I decided to check out their equally famous sesame oil chicken.
I was really glad for being a little adventurous that day - wasting cholesterol and calories on sub-standard food will leave me feeling regretful and miserable.
The sesame oil chicken at Ah Soon restaurant was a pleasant surprise to my fussy taste buds.
The chicken and slivers of julienned ginger were simmering in a claypot of still furiously bubbling hot juices and throwing up aromatic steam when it arrived at our table. It took a few minutes for the claypot and its contents to cool down a little, and for the steam to subside before I can take this picture.
When I took my first bite of the chicken, I was immediately delighted by the smooth tenderness of the flesh and the delicateness of its flavour. The skin was supple, full of natural sweet chicky flavour - perhaps, the best part of the chicken 😄
Such natural fresh flavour is possible only when the sesame oil chicken is prepared with the freshest fowl.
Furthermore, the chicken’s natural juices must be sealed in with the most intense heat. For this, Ah Soon’s uses traditional fiery red hot charcoal stoves.
I enjoyed the juices and smooth well balanced savoury sweet aromatic sauces so much that I actually slurped it all up like a tonic. Yet I did not feel thirsty afterwards - perhaps signs that the juices were not artificially boosted with much MSG or excessive salt and sugar.
This delicious meal of top quality sesame oil chicken enough for two persons costs RM16.00 (2011 price).

Ah Soon is definitely on my return visit list 😄
