Pork Leg Rice @ Cat City Night Food Tai Pan Corner Padungan Kuching Sarawak 猫城夜市

The very first day we arrived for this Kuching trip, buddy Aven said he would like to try the pork leg rice stall at Cat City Night Food in Padungan.

This stall has been trending, viral on social media since last year. It's the youngest pork leg rice stall in Kuching and already has a strong following.

It's an alley stall between two buildings along Jalan Padungan. I like such hyperlocal settings for my makan (eating) trips 😀

They have braised pork leg, knuckles, trotters, belly, intestines, and other stuff like egg. They also have Hakka style stewed pork belly with preserved vegetables 梅菜扣肉.

We ordered pork leg and trotter for three, but the plate came with intestine, pork belly and sourish preserved vegetables. We were not spared braised eggs. Apparently, this was the standard 3-pax set.

RM65 serving for three pax. Come with soup and chili sauce. But, there was no curry which is a signature feature of old school Kuching style pork leg rice

The pork leg and trotter were nice. Soft, gelatinous and well infused with savoury flavours with subtle 5-spice. It doesn't have as much subtle layers of old school Kuching pork leg but have similar mild intensity.

Cat City Night Food prides itself that their pork leg doesn't have pork taste thus appealing to the new generation of pork leg fans.

I prefer Cat City Night Food over chain stall pork leg which tend to be heavier on savoury-salty intensity and is flatter tasting to mask pork taste.

The pork intestines were well cleaned and cooked right, leaving some soft spring to the bite. The same somewhat flat savoury taste was dominant.

Nearly too soft pork belly, so nice texture-wise 👍

A clump of crunchy sour vegetables to cut through the fat, for those who need it.

I like the watery soup with drinkably gentle savoury taste and 5-spice flavour. Like it some much that I requested for top up which they obliged cheerfully.

I forgot to take a photo of the chili sauce which was sharp spicy hot and laced with galangal (blue ginger). I like it.

I hope to eat my way through the many pork leg rice stalls in Kuching over time. In Johor Bahru, bak kut teh is the staple pork dish while in Kuching, it is pork leg rice.

For this Kuching trip, we had time to only try two - Huang You Liang and Cat City Night Food.

They represent two ends of the pork leg rice spectrum and two different eras. Huang You Liang the decades old, old school and unique style which I was delighted to experience.

Cat City Night Food is the modern, contemporary take on the dish. It seemed closer in texture and taste profile of the popular pork leg rice chain stalls in Singapore hawker centres.
