Running an errand near Taman Sentosa and needing a light breakfast, I recalled this little stall in New Star Food Court 新星美食中心 coffee shop which serves tasty Ipoh kuey teow soup and prawn mee soup.
Nothing much changed since I first ate here in 2012. The stall still doesn't have a name. The signboard just says what the stall sells - Ipoh kuey teow soup, prawn mee (soup & dry), chicken lo mee. That's all.
The stall has its loyal following but otherwise still below the radar except for its fans.
My usual order here is the Ipoh kuey teow soup. The soup was marvellous.
On top of the sweet chicken stock was a robust overlay of prawny crustacean savouriness. The savoury sweet soup packed a surprising flavour punch especially for the unsuspecting.
The rice noodles (kway teow), shrimp, char siew and chicken were all good, adding textures and flavours to the dish. But, the soup alone was already home run for this Ipoh kuey teow soup.
The soft kway teow noodles were slurpy smooth. Its subtle sweetness complemented by the assertively savoury sweet soup clinging to its strands.
There were 2 of us, so I tried the prawn mee soup for the first time.
The prawn soup was a kicker - the savoury crustacean umami was strong and come with a hot chili sting at the end. The heat was not the sharp kind but it made the savoury prawn soup tasted even better.
The requisite ingredients like shrimp, pork slices, fish cake slices, egg and stall fried shallots were all good. But, the star in the bowl was the prawny soup.
Generic yellow noodles provided the necessary carbs. Even here, the boss got the texture just right - tender with a light spring and all alkaline taste washed away.
Recommended for you 👍 Humble, low profile coffee shop stall with solid punchy prawny umami for their Ipoh kuey teow and prawn mee soup.
I didn't use their savoury spicy sambal chili much as I was not willing to upset the finely tuned balance of their prawny soups.

Today, my friend Bryan brought me to this little stall at New Star kopitiam near to Plaza Sentosa (the former Lien Hoe Complex) in Taman Sentosa.
Bryan said I must try this stall's Ipoh Kway Teow soup.
One sip and I was literary bowled over by the full bodied soup which had a distinct prawny, umami flavour.
Other than the soup, the rest of the ingredients that made up the dish such as the hor fun, prawns and pieces of chicken were pretty ordinary in taste. But, the outstanding soup alone was enough to make me add this stall to my list of favourites.
When I saw the little mountain of prawn heads used to make the soup, there was little wonder as to why the soup was so deeply prawny and umami.
Furthermore, this stall uses local sea prawns which are more flavourful than farm bred freshwater prawns.
I will be back to try out their equally popular prawn mee.

This is one of those understated kind of shop. You don't see long que or crowd but the guy is always busy. When I brought others there, they will always ask this question, " nice meh?". After the first slurp and bite, it becomes, "how come I never knew about this? Why didn't you tell me before? " . And then a new fan was born. It never fails. Since this post I've been there almost every week. This guy is consistent. Its always a great meal. Great post. Beautiful pics. Thanks
ReplyDeleteThanks and am glad that you like it too. Wish I could have a short chat with the boss and a picture of him at work, but he is a private person and camera shy :P
