It's a typical Johor Kaki outing. We parked the car and pounded the pavements in search of local favourites.

Wandering purposefully.

We don't know what we will find, till we found it.

This time, we stumbled upon Sheng Ji Wantan Mee 升记家乡自制云吞面 in Taman Tampoi Indah 2.

The friendly lady boss, Ms Chan and her husband Ah Bao 亚宝 have been running this humble wantan mee shop for over 10 years now.

Sheng Ji 升记 serves a style of wantan noodles popular in the smaller towns of Johor - I've seen it in Paloh, Layang-Layang and others.

Typical of small town shops, the noodles are house made and the savoury sauce is a simple blend of mainly dark soy and shallot oil. Not quite my preferred style of wanton mee sauce but this style is common and very popular with many Johoreans.

The wantan noodles come topped with (unremarkable) house roasted char siew and a sprinkling of fried minced pork (something not seen in Singapore wantan mee).

The house made whole egg noodles were nicely springy (though in a different way from my favourites Chin Chin 晶晶 or Yap Kee 葉记).

The wantan mee comes with two of these extra crispy, grease free fried wantans. Next time I am here, I shall make a side order of these wantans. They were among the best fried wantans that I have tried so far.

The thumb sized wantans were filled with minced pork well marinated in sesame oil and wrapped in soft slippery smooth wantan skin. The savoury bone based broth had a nice peppery flavour.

I like these wantans and the clear flavoursome soup.

We also ordered a plate of wantan mee with braised chicken feet, as I love this Cantonese classic.

The chicken claws were braised in a savoury, mushroomy braising sauce till the bones were soft. The soft wrinkly skin was just barely hanging on to the bones like a loose wet glove.

Eggy al dente noodles tossed in savoury, mushroomy sauce is one of my favourite ways of eating wantan mee.

If I were in Tampoi Indah and needed a nice simple comforting meal, Sheng Ji Wantan Mee would make me very satisfied.
