Wanton Noodle at Setia Tropika Johor Bahru 豪記茶餐室 ⭐⭐⭐✱✱
I stumbled upon this little wanton mee stall at Setia Tropika some time back and have since like to come here when I am passing near by - e.g. when I am heading north on the North-South Expressway or have errands to run around here.
The wanton mee stall is inside 豪記茶餐室 which is a typical coffee shop in Malaysia. The stall has a sign which says 翁姑慕申 - a reference to the popular Ungku Mohsin Wanton Mee & Laksa stall.
The stall holder Mr Goh is the nephew of Mr Lee (who together with his mum) founded the famous Ungku Mohsin Wanton Mee & Laksa 翁姑慕申云吞面.辣沙 50 years ago. Mr Goh's stall here in Setia Tropika is 6 years old.
Eating Mr Goh's wanton mee at Setia Tropika reminds me of the Ungku Mohsin Wanton Mee - they are similar in style but with slight differences.
The RM5 set comes with a bowl of noodles and a bowl of soup with wantons, pork ball, fish ball and tofu.
I like this egg noodles done just right by Mr Goh. It has body and soft firmness to the bite which I love.
The mild savoury spicy sauce with a bit of lard isn't very robust or intense but I am won over by the al dente egg noodles.
The char siew wasn't sliced razor thin which is a plus for me. Taste wise it is nice - gently sweet savoury - though not at the same level as those with caramelization and char outside.
Besides the al dente egg noodles, I enjoyed Mr Goh's accompanying soup a lot.
The light bodied soup has a nice natural savoury sweetness from boiling pork bones, anchovies and soya beans. The soup also has depth and layers of flavours from the fish balls, pork balls, and tofu simmering inside Mr Goh's pot of broth.
The little tender knob of fresh minced pork is wrapped with thin slippery wanton skin.
I especially enjoyed this tofu stuffed with fish paste. Mr Goh's wife makes the tofu sold at the stall. They are soft and almost watery to the bite. We can taste the flavour of soya beans in the tofu. This is one of best tofu served with wanton mee that I have tasted.
3-Star 豪記茶餐室 coffee shop has a nice simple wanton mee stall serving tender crunchy egg noodles and excellent home made tofu with good wantons in a tasty broth. This is a good food and kopi stop when you are passing by or is around at Setia Tropika.
