I have been on the look out since reader Phuan SE asked me where she can get porridge with fried intestines. So, when I saw buddy Elaine Chu post about her favourite comfort food - porridge with fried intestines at Restoran Jingle Bell - I quickly pay the old shop in Johor Jaya a visit. Reader Emily Chua has also recommended Restoran Jingle Bell to me for their rice wine pork liver.
You know what? When we arrived, Elaine was also here enjoying her porridge with fried pork intestine 😄
Restoran Jingle Bell 金谷铃巴生肉骨茶 is one of those well kept secrets only locals know about. It's laid back with bare bones furnishing but comfortable enough. It's one of those countless, nondescript, walk-past coffee shops which we will miss unless someone alerted us to the goodies inside.
Kasl from Nepal is manning the cooking stations today at Restoran Jingle Bell. Kasl has been here in Johor Jaya for 8 years - he speaks better Mandarin than me 😅 and I found out that he is an excellent cook after eating his food.
We were here this morning for the Hong Kong porridge with fried intestines, so we ordered this first.
Oh... I can feel the fried intestines' light brittle crisp at the end of the well seasoned pair of chopsticks.
Tossed and buried the fried pork intestines into the porridge. Each mouthful is a mix of flavours - the porcine savoury sweet porridge blends well with the mild porky savouriness of the fried intestine. The soft cottony texture (棉棉 the Cantonese say) of the rice porridge is mixed with the chewy crisp of the fried intestines. We love this porridge with fried intestines.
We then went for a bowl of porridge with pork organs - it's all hidden under the gruel which is topped with you char kueh (Chinese fried crullers), scallion, coriander, and fried shallot.
Layers of softness and savoury sweetness from the jumble of gooey rice gruel, small pork intestine, liver slices and a raw egg.
We went crazy - we had a 3rd bowl, this time a classic Cantonese pork porridge. It was good 😋
We couldn't resist adding a clay pot of chicken in rice wine 黄酒鸡.
The bubbling hot rice wine broth was heavy bodied with bold sweet tangy flavours and aroma.
Kasl cooked the fresh chicken to the right doneness - cooked through yet retaining it's tenderness and natural sweetness. This is a very good rice wine chicken.
Emily said I should try Restoran Jingle Bell's rice wine with pork liver as well. Yes, I shall surely be back for that, and their bak kut teh too.
All the delicious food plus a barley drink we had this morning came to a grand total of RM27.
3-Star (out of 5) because the Cantonese style porridge has that coveted soft cottony texture. The flavours though mild has nice layers of savouriness and sweetness from the fresh ingredients. The prices are very competitive too. A good place for a simple and nice meal.

Went for dinner today. Tasty meal. They even have porridge for vegetarian. Thank you for the recommendation
ReplyDeleteYou are most welcome. I shall be back to try their other dishes like bak kut teh too.
DeleteJohor Jaya is so huge. Is Jingle located along the stretch of the big food Centre or the wet market? Or along the shop houses at Cawanmas coffee shop?;)
ReplyDeleteGood recommendation.
