Restoran Pandan Beef Ball Noodles Johor Bahru 班兰牛肉丸 ⭐⭐⭐✱✱
Pandan Beef Noodle 班兰牛肉丸 with a 60+ year history, is an old brand in Johor Bahru beef noodles. Pandan serves a style of beef noodles different from the more commonly found Hainanese style. I like Pandan Beef Noodles but only after I freed my mind from Hainanese style beef noodles 😝
Pandan Beef Noodle shop is located at Jalan Bakawali 37, at a quiet corner of Taman Johor Jaya. It's a large, clean, cool and airy shop. The atmosphere is laid back and relaxed. Customers strolling in, often in family groups, were mostly locals and regulars.
The lady boss' father-in-law, old Mr Yeo founded the original stall in Kampung Pandan 60+ years ago. There is still an old Pandan Beef Noodle shop at Kampung Pandan now run by Mdm Yeo's son 👈click
I started off with a bowl of soup with mixed beef balls, meat, tripe and tendon for RM9. (I didn't want noodles today because I just busted my daily quota of carbs with a plate of average fried chai tow kueh or carrot cake nearby 😢 )
Pandan Beef Noodle's soup is clear and doesn't have the herbal taste of Hainanese style beef noodle broth. Pandan's clear soup is savoury and has a distinct fried garlic flavour from the bits of freshly fried garlic floating in the soup. There was just a very subtle beefy flavour.
The lady boss told me that the soup is made by boiling beef bones with the juices and water run off from making the beef balls. It's similar to how fish soup at real fishball noodle shops is made - by boiling fish bones with water run off from making real fish balls.
Pandan's beef balls were dense, firm yet tender with a light spring. It has just a very mild beefiness.
Mdm Yeo said that they personally go to Larkin market daily to select their fresh beef early in the morning. They buy the beef in slabs, grind it themselves and hand make them into beef balls i.e. the old way since Pandan Beef Noodles was started 60+ years ago.
So, Pandan's beef balls are fresh as they are made and sold on the same day. I can attest that the beef balls I had today were super fresh.
I love this tender juicy beef though they were cut into rather small pieces. I like the beefiness though it was rather mild.
There were little squares of tripe which were nicely spongy and releases gentle beefiness with each bite.
The tendons look and feel like jelly. They don't carry much flavour but people just love how they feel in the mouth.
Second round. RM9 worth of beef balls in soup.
Round 3. RM9 worth of meat, tripe and tendons.
3-Star Pandan Beef Noodles is a change from the more common Hainanese beef noodles. Pandan's beef noodles have their loyal following. Once you start to enjoy it's milder beefiness and no herbs flavours, you could become a fan too.
