Ya Wang was our second food stop for this morning's makan trail in JB's old downtown.

Ya Wang is typical of old school eating houses found in Malaysia and Singapore. Bright, simply furnished and clean, they are also comfortable and air conditioned.

We had half a dang gui herbal duck - Ya Wang's signature. (They also have other herbs like ginseng etc at RM68 per whole bird.)

I like Ya Wang's ducks because of their signature herbal sauce and marination that penetrate deep into the duck meat. Ya Wang's duck skin is not crispy because it is drenched in sauce but it didn't bother me much as the sauce is soooo... good 😃 I was scooping up spoonfuls of herbal sauce and drinking it up after we finished eating all the duck 😋

We also like Ya Wang's char siew which is splashed with a thick savoury-sweet sauce.

The sweet char siew was tender and juicy even though it was the normal, mainly lean cut.

We liked the char siew so much that we had a second order. This time we specified that we want the "fatty cut".

The char siew was just as good but slightly sweeter and more juicy due to more fats.

The siew yok's crispy skin was slightly chewy and the meat and fat a little flat, salty tasting.

We also had a quarter of fried chicken. It was savoury, tender and juicy.

👉 Roast duck fans can try Ya Wang's herbal ducks. Their herbal sauces and marination are deeply infused in every fibre of the duck - delicious, and quite addictive, actually. The browned skin is slightly soft, wet with sauce, so it's not the typical crispy roast duck.

  1. They have to have a humoungous weather worn duck hanging outside their premises. Seems to have disappeared about a year back :-)
