Restoran TKK is one of the small cluster of sea side seafood restaurants at Teluk Jawa in Johor Bahru. TKK has been here for 15 years but it seemed a little under the radar. This was my first visit to TKK and I will be back for more.
Restoran TKK is popular with local families. The sea view restaurant over looks the Johor Straits and is directly opposite the bright lights of Sembawang shipyard on the other side.
As TKK restaurant is spacious, it does not have the feel of crushing crowds. However, service is a little patchy due to inexperienced staff (common experience in JB).
The sea food is kept alive in tubs and cement tanks. It also helps to purge their digestive systems of sand.
Overall, we had a good experience at TKK.
Shovel head shark nose steamed and splashed with hot light soy sauce and garnished with chopped chili padi, fried garlic etc.
The shovel head shark nose was very fresh. It was all collagen. Tender and bouncy like a firm jelly. Very little natural flavour except for a subtle scaly taste. The savoury light soy sauce and mild hot chili sting made the spongy collagen more palatable. Considered a delicacy - it's really an acquired taste 😛
Gong gong simply blanched in hot water and served with a chili and soy sauce dip.
The large plate of gong gong had an earthly smell but the tender chewy meat inside was clean and had a nice briny sweetness. I ate half a dozen of these with a skinny wooden stick (without using the dipping sauce). Nice.
Salted egg yolk crab from the next table. I didn't taste this but the people at the next table said it was good.
I like TKK's chili crab. The thick pasty sauce was loaded with clean tasting sweetness and egginess with slight spiciness. Some people might find the chili lacks punch but I like it as it allows me to taste the meaty crab's natural briny sweetness.
Steamed prawns on a bed of savoury eggy sauce. The natural briny sweetness of the meaty prawn was simply marvellous.
La La clams stir fried in sambal chili. The sambal chili was mild so it did not overpower the clams' natural briny sweetness. Well cleaned and meaty. I like it - had about half a dozen 😋
Simple but well executed, tasty fried noodles. Tasty savoury sweet sauce, crunchy bean sprouts, noodles just the right texture and moistness, not overly greasy.
👉 Overall, we had a good experience at TKK Seafood. Seafood was live and nicely cooked - the food was delicious. The ambiance was rustic, kampung sea side. Service was patchy but the more experienced staff were friendly and helpful. Pricing was slightly premium but fair (buddy's treat 😄).
